Coordinated by guitarist Rob MacDonald, the Class Axe Guitar Workshop connects five Canadian composers with an advanced musician to develop a short piece for classical guitar.

The Guitar Society of Toronto is working with CMC Ontario to stimulate more compositions for solo guitar. Each year, we issue a call for proposals, inviting any Canadian composer to participate. Our priority is to involve composers with limited experience writing for guitar. Check the CMC website regularly for updates on our call for proposals.

The workshop is structured over five months (usually running between August and December) to allow time for consultations, reflection, and refinement. Composers acquire insight into writing for guitar and receive a performance of their pieces. The final concert is presented as a live video stream, and composers receive audio recordings of their pieces. Composers also benefit from an enhanced professional network. This is a voluntary workshop.

Any Canadian composer can apply. Although workshops will be conducted in Toronto, composers can join via video conference. No prior experience in composing for guitar is required.
Each session of Class Axe includes four workshops that will provide focused time for composers to work with guitarist Rob MacDonald and other guest musicians. Composers joining remotely will coordinate with the CMC to conference with the workshop.
The pieces developed through this workshop will be premiered during a free salon concert at the CMC (Toronto).
