The Ontario Region of the Canadian Music Centre is pleased to announce that April Aliermo has been selected for the 2021 Media Production Residency.

April is connecting the residency to her expanding sound art practice, and will be focusing her research on the inspirations, stories, and works of sound artists—with an emphasis on BIPOC artists past and present, and a particular interest in womyn, non-binary and Queer artists. As part of the residency process April will be engaging in research in the coming months, and will produce photo essays and written reflections on each of the featured artists. The photo essays will be shared through Instagram and a short run of zines.

CMC Ontario is thrilled to be working with April on this project and we look forward to sharing the results of the residency.

More about April / For the last 10 years, playing bass, synths and samplers, April has extensively toured North America, Europe and Asia with her rock and electronic bands, Hooded Fang and Phèdre. In 2018, she began her solo foray into sound art. She mentored under pioneering sound artist Christina Kubisch at the Darmstadt Summer Course New Music Festival, studying and recording “hidden” electromagnetic sounds as well as site specific, immersive sound installations. As a Filipina-Canadian artist, April attempts to create sonic works that gently ask one to question socio-political systems and reality. April values amplifying unheard voices, and has made 20 documentaries for CBC Arts that feature groundbreaking artists and musicians. She is a strong believer in empowering others with knowledge and strives to build conscious communities.
