The Ontario Region of the Canadian Music Centre and the Alliance for Canadian New Music Projects are pleased to announce the results of the ACTIVATE Young Composer Program 2020-21 call for submissions.

We received an impressive range of submissions from across Canada. Adjudicators Anna Höstman and Aline Homzy reviewed each of the submitted pieces and provided composers with feedback on their writing. Adjudicators also shared information about other contemporary composers and works that might serve to inspire and extend many of the exciting directions that were exhibited by the submissions.

The adjudication process was followed by selections for the ACTIVATE reading session and award program. We are thrilled to announce the following composers and works that were recognized from among the submissions:

Reading Session Participants
Sointu Aalto, Jumping Spider
Luke Blackmore, directions and distances
Jack Campbell, Muse No. 2
Isaac Page, Poem
Michael Selvaggi, Phantom Remnants
Connie Wynn, Dancing in the Mirror

Award winners
Sointu Aalto, MASS EXTINCTION | Louise MacPherson Memorial Award
Michael Selvaggi, Pond Soundscapes | Honourable mention

All applicants will be invited to audit the reading session, which will be scheduled in the spring.

The ACTIVATE Young Composer Program is made possible through the generous support of the Azrieli Foundation.
