The Canadian Music Centre’s Chalmers Performance Space at 20 St. Joseph Street in Toronto hosts a variety of CMC programming, and it also serves as a venue for new music performers, composers, and other organizations from across Canada and around the world.

Our multi-purpose space is available for rehearsals, recordings (demo), concerts, exhibits, launches and community uses such as seminars, workshops, and town hall meetings.

The performance space and lounge are located on the main floor and there is an additional meeting room located on the second floor.

The performance space is 596 square feet and seats 50 people. The space boasts a 7′ Steingraeber and Sohne concert grand piano.

The lounge is 195 square feet and acts as a service bar area, often ideally combined with the performance space.

The meeting space on the second floor is 460 square feet and has a large board room table for 25 and a built-in Mondopad.

The SAC-CMC Writers Room is a quiet work space ideal for studying, and composing/songwriting. The room can be used by 1-3 people at a time. Located on the main floor, the Writers Room includes studio monitors, a full sized keyboard, acoustic guitar, and desk.

Accessibility:

An accessible, gender neutral washroom is adjacent to the performance space. There are additional gender neutral washrooms on the second floor, although these are not fully accessible. All floors of the CMC have elevator access. The main entrance to the building is accessed through two sets of stairs on the front lawn. Street-level access is available by a path  to the right of the main entrance—visitors must buzz for entry.

Standard Rental Rates and Bookings:
$50 per hour (weekdays during office hours)
$110 per hour for all other times

Associate Composers of the CMC receive a 30% discount off this price
If you are playing at least 50% Canadian music you can receive a 10% discount off this price

Services available from the CMC in addition to the space rental:

• Piano use: $30
• Backline use: Use of the drum set (breakables not included): $15
• “One touch” audio recording: recording using ceiling mounted room microphones. Levels are set beforehand and not monitored. A static camera recording may be added upon request: $20.
• Live sound “quick pack”*: most used items for live playback including PA, Mixer, instrument/vocal microphones , cables, and stands. Does not include a CMC staff person to run sound: $30
• Stereo Mixdown: Mixed recording using separate mics for each instrument/singer. Includes a CMC staff person to monitor sound. N.B. CMC does not have the capability to create a multitrack recording: $150
• Switched video recording:  In addition to the audio recording. A switched camera recording using the CMC’s overhead cameras. Can only be used with the “One Touch” recording if there is no audience: $40
• Livestream: Room mics and switched overhead video recorded and broadcast to CMC channels or renters channels on request. Includes CMC staff person to run the stream: $200
• Box office services: CMC adds a 5% service charge for tickets sold through our system.

The CMC is not a licensed venue for the sale of alcohol, however a Special Occasions Permit may be purchased at $150 (sale) or $50 (non-sale)

The piano is regularly tuned and maintained, however, a specific piano tuning may also be requested from the CMC at a rate of $150.
