SUMMARY:Rivers Workshop: ContaQt - Online Rehearsal and Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Music Centre\, in collaboration with the Canadian League of Composers\, is pleased to announce Rivers (re-imagined): a monthly series of presentations and hands-on professional development workshops for composers. \nThese will be in-person events at the Canadian Music Centre’s Performance Space in Toronto\, and they will be available for online streaming to ensure access for composers right across the country. Topics will include: grants\, funding\, and project management; contracts and licensing agreements; publicity and marketing; music technology; music education\, and others. \nThe workshops will provide concrete guidance and clear\, hands-on training for common professional scenarios encountered by the membership of both organizations\, and they will be free to both Associate Composers of the CMC\, as well as members of the CLC. \n———————————————————————————————————————————– \nOur first presentation/workshop will take place on Wednesday\, October 19\, 2022\, at 5:30. Members of ContaQt New Music will discuss and demonstrate the aesthetic and technical elements of online rehearsal and collaboration. \nLike many ensembles at the onset of the initial pandemic lockdowns\, ContaQt was faced with discovering new ways to musically engage with each other and audiences. Led by the research and experimentation of Jerry Pergolesi and Andrew Noseworthy\, and with technological facilitation by Jeff Morton\, and online performance mentoring with Tina Pearson\, we developed a means to play together in real-time from our isolated locations using a combination of digital audio workstations and the audio transmitter plugin\, AudioMovers’ ListenTo. \nThrough this process\, we became more integrated as a performing group than ever before and extended our artistic practice in ways that benefited our expanding repertoire that includes music by Brian Eno\, original compositions\, and improvisations. This music also embraces and engages with latency that is inherent to the internet. This workshop will demonstrate the potential for this performance practice and the possibilities for collaboration using this high-fidelity means of audio transmission.

SUMMARY:These are a Few of Our Favourite Bees - Artists Talk
DESCRIPTION:These are a Few of Our Favourite Bees investigates wild\, native bees and their ecology through playful dioramas\, video\, audio\, relief print and poetry. Inspired by lambe lambe – South American miniature puppet stages for a single viewer – four distinct dioramas convey surreal yet enlightening worlds where bees lounge in cozy environs\, animals watch educational films and ethereal sounds animate bowls of berries (having been pollinated by their diverse bee visitors). Displays reminiscent of natural history museums invite close inspection\, revealing minutiae of these tiny\, diverse animals\, our native bees. From thumb-sized to extremely tiny\, fuzzy to hairless\, black\, yellow\, red or emerald green\, each native bee tells a story while her actions create the fruits of pollination\, reflecting the perpetual dance of animals\, plants and planet. With a special appearance by Toronto’s official bee\, the jewelled green sweat bee\, Agapostemon virescens! \nIn this Artist Talk\, Sarah Peebles\, Ele Willoughby\, Rob Cruickshank and Steven Humphrey will discuss their artistic practices and themes related to the exhibition. \nStreaming Link

SUMMARY:Chris Pruden's Suns
DESCRIPTION:Suns is a set of solo piano improvisations and compositions performed by Toronto pianist Chris Pruden. \nWhile already recognized as a notable Canadian pianist/keyboardist in several projects (Tara Kannangara\, Sammy Jackson\, Zinnia\, Future Machines\, Language Arts)\, this is the first release under his own name. \nSuns\, released on Elastic Recordings\, is refreshingly informal\, recorded amongst friends\, documenting unfinished thoughts and new reflections in the moments they arrive and depart. Pruden exhibits technical and musical control that is always on the edge\, tumbling through insecurities and surrendering to the sound of the moment. It is both meditative and frenetic\, playful and serious\, vulnerable and resilient. \nThe seven pieces take influences from the music of György Ligeti\, Sun Ra\, Cecil Taylor\, Unsuk Chin\, Ann Southam\, and Elliott Carter (whose piano piece Catenaires is featured as a final track). \nThe album launch will feature a performance from Chris\, and a set of music from Yunjin Claire Lee. The event will be live streamed. No tickets will be made available publicly. \n\n\n\nChris Pruden Bio & Music \nChris Pruden is a pianist/keyboardist based in Toronto\, ON. Heavily influenced by jazz\, contemporary classical\, folk\, rock and electronic music\, Chris has performed across North America\, China\, and Europe. He is a frequent sideman and collaborator with Tara Kannangara\, Sammy Jackson\, Zinnia\, Language Arts\, Future Machines\, and Ronley Teper's Lipliners. \nYunjin Claire Lee Bio & Music \n \nYunjin Claire Lee is a Korean Canadian pianist\, keyboardist\, sound designer\, composer and producer; a sought-after collaborator for creating electrifying soundscapes. She has worked on local and international projects in an extensive range of genres including traditional and avant-garde jazz\, contemporary classical\, musique concrète\, ambient techno\, synthwave\, and pop.   \nHer debut album Voluntary Response (2020) – a solo piano improvisation recordings weaved with electronic processing via Rabid Elephant's prototype synth\, gained her an international fanbase in the experimental music scene. Her ambient electronic singles Underwater Arcade (2020) and Dive (2021) had been featured on radio stations across the country such as CJSW 90.9 FM\, CKUT 90.3 FM\, CITR 101.9 FM\, and CHMA 106.9 FM. \nIn October 2021\, she was featured on Discover Women in Jazz series on JAZZ.FM91\, showcasing a new electro-acoustic duo with Ben Grossman on hurdy-gurdy. They are currently working on a new album to be released in 2022. \nPhoto credit: Brendan Mariani \nDive by Yunjin Claire Lee\nAbout Elastic Recordings \nElastic Recordings is the co-creation of Canadian vibraphonist\, Michael Davidson\, and Canadian double bassist\, Dan Fortin. It is a collective outlet exploring the spaces where composition and improvisation overlap; the points at which nostalgia meets the present moment.   \nThe label will promote music that fits between the gaps of genre and that has been historically difficult to classify.\n \nFollow Elastic Recordings | Instagram\, Twitter

SUMMARY:Tradition & Disruption
DESCRIPTION:Tradition and Disruption explores some of the opposing and conflicting forces behind the creation of piano music in the classical European tradition from the 17th to the 21st centuries. Through their works\, every composer on this program portrays the co-existence of multiple cultural\, national\, stylistic and geographic elements. In some cases\, as with Bach\, Tajčević\, Chopin or Liszt\, this contrast integrates smoothly with traditional forms and modes of expression; in others\, as in the case of Rachmaninov\, Maksimović and Sokolović\, the disruptive elements strive to break loose from the confines of centuries’ old tradition. \nIn his personal and expressive performing style\, Canadian-Serbian pianist Viktor Lazarov brings to you a recital of his favourite styles: Baroque\, Romantic and Contemporary. In his original programmes\, Lazarov continues to champion the music inspired by Balkan themes\, such as the works of composers Marko Tajčević\, Svetlana Maksimović and Ana Sokolović. \nTime / Doors 7:30 pm\, Concert 8:00 pm \nTickets / $25 General\, $15 Senior/Student \nProgramme / \nJ.S. The programme will focus on five works by Canadian cellist-composers commissioned by VC2\, each inspired by one of the Beethoven Sonatas for Cello and Piano. These pieces were commissioned for the duo by their former teacher and Albertan cello virtuoso Shauna Rolston-Shaw. The five works will be contrasted with two newly commissioned works by esteemed Canadians Kelly-Marie Murphy and Vincent Ho as well as other cello centric works from at home and abroad that explore the vast sonic capabilities of the cello duo. \nTime | Doors 7:00pm\, Concert 7:30pm \nProgramme | \nEx Animo\, Hunter Coblentz (b. 1988)\nHeist 2\, Vincent Ho (b. 1975)\nFive Little Pieces\, Andrew Downing (b.1973)\nEntsprechung\, Matt Brubeck (b.1961)\nRidge and Furrow\, Fjola Evans (b. 1987)\nFinal Glimpse\, Kelly-Marie Murphy (b. 1964)\nArboreto Salvatico\, Giovanni Sollima (b. 1962)\nDogged\, Fjola Evans (b. 1987)\nDuo? o Du…\, Thomas Demenga (b. 1954)\nTwo Cellos\, Dilations\, Hunter Coblentz (b. 1988)\nTriumvirate\, Raphael Weinroth-Browne (b.1989) \nAbout the artists | VC2 Cello Duo is an innovative cello duo ensemble that captivates audiences through their performances of classical masterworks\, unknown gems and boundary pushing music. SUMMARY:KappaMusik Crossing
DESCRIPTION:Experimental Music for Ensembles\, Drums\, and Electronics | James Harley / Philippe Hode-Keyser \nThis new disc represents decades of musical exploration\, rooted in jazz but pushing far out from that tradition. All of the music is based on notated scores for large ensembles (« big bands ») but improvisation plays a large role. Performances by Hode-Keyser in Montreal of existing music composed in the 1980s by Harley led to two new works composed specially for Hode-Keyser’s Ensemble Kappa. These scores question the jazz tradition through a lense shaped by immersion in European contemporary music\, after Harley had spent six years living in London\, Paris\, and Warsaw.  KappaMusik was premiered at the Open Ears Festival in Kitchener. \nThis CMC presentation will explore the dynamic relationship between notated musical scores and creative interpretation/improvisation. The Cool Hearts Band will perform two versions of Sabbath\, one of the works included on the  CD\, alongside a discussion of the creative process that shaped the project. \nJames Harley is Professor of Music and Critical Studies in Improvisation at the University of Guelph. Philippe Hode-Keyser is a musician and band-leader in Montreal. \nAdmission Free* \nTime / 2:00-4:00 pm / Doors at 1:30 pm \n*Audience members who make a $20 donation to the CMC during advanced registration or at the door will receive a free copy of the album courtesy of the artist.

SUMMARY:In Waves | A Presentation by Darcy Spidle
DESCRIPTION:Just over a decade ago\, Darcy Spidle (aka chik white) moved to West Chezzetcook\, a small coastal village outside of Halifax\, Nova Scotia. Around that time a friend gave him a toy jaw harp as a birthday gift. The harp worked well enough that Spidle became obsessed with playing it\, and he became especially fond of taking it on hikes along the rugged coastline near his home. For Spidle\, jaw harp and the sea have been intertwined ever since\, a fact well documented throughout his substantial discography. \nAs his jaw harp technique advanced\, so did Spidle’s use of ocean recordings. The early recordings are simple: rhythmic drones on the harp and waves pounding in the distance. Later releases involve more abstract engagement with the instrument and increasingly experimental approaches to capturing marine audio—recording from a musical raft adrift at sea\, noisemining magnet tape dredged from the ocean floor\, amplifying hurricane wind\, etc. With his talk at the CMC\, Darcy will attempt to explain the evolution of his work as both a jaw harp player and field recordist. \nAdmission is Free \nIf you cannot join in person\, tune in to the Livestream of the presentation! \nBanner Image Credit: Alex Pearson
