SUMMARY:A Thread of Sand: music from the studio of Ann Southam
DESCRIPTION:of-the-now: Archipelago presents a portrait of Ann Southam’s electronic music\, in partnership with the Canadian Music Centre. Featuring The Reprieve (1983) and the previously unreleased A Thread of Sand (1972)\, we will delve into her music in conversation with pianist Eve Egoyan and dancer/choreographer Peggy Baker about their relationships with the composer and her works. \nWe are excited to share previously unreleased footage of Eve and Ann rehearsing\, as well as Peggy Baker’s piece Strand\, set to Ann’s music. Please consider donating if you are able. All proceeds go to the artists involved. \nAbout the Artists | \nAnn Southam was born in Winnipeg\, Manitoba in 1937 but lived most of her life in Toronto. After completing musical studies at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music in the early 1960’s\, Ann Southam began a teaching and composing career which included a long and productive association with modern dance. As well as creating music for some of Canada’s major modern dance companies and choreographers including The Toronto Dance Theatre\, Danny Grossman\, Dancemakers\, Patricia Beatty\, Christopher House and Rachel Browne\, she was an instructor in electronic music at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and has also participated in many “composer-in-the-classroom” programs in elementary and high schools. While a great deal of her work was electroacoustic music on tape\, in her later years she became increasingly interested in music for acoustic instruments. She composed concert music for a variety of acoustic instruments and instrumental ensembles\, working with such artists and ensembles as Eve Egoyan\, Christina Petrowska Quilico and Arraymusic. Ann Southam’s work was commissioned through the Canada Council\, the Ontario Arts Council\, and the CBC\, and has been performed in Canada\, Europe and the U.S. She is a member of the Canadian Music Centre\, the Canadian League of Composers and a founding member of the Association of Canadian Women Composers. She was the recipient of the Friends of Canadian Music Award in 2001. Ann Southam passed away November 25\, 2010. \nEve Egoyan is an artist whose medium is the piano. Her intense focus\, command of the instrument\, insightful interpretations\, and unique programmes welcome audiences into unknown territory. Her recordings have received accolades including “Best Classical”\, The Globe and Mail (1999)\, for her first solo CD\, and one of “Ten Top” classical discs\, The New Yorker magazine (2009)\, and “Top Classical Disc of the Year”\, The Globe and Mail (2011). Eve’s recent releases include Thought and Desire\, works by Linda Catlin Smith\, and De Puro Amor / En Amor Duro\, Maria de Alvear’s epic diptych. Recent touring includes solo recitals at the following festivals: Transart\, Italy; Klangspuren\, Austria; the Huddersfield Festival\, U.K.; and the Modulus Festival\, Vancouver\, Canada. Eve’s most recent project\, SOLO FOR DUET\, is a deeply integrated virtuosic mix of sound\, image\, and unspoken narrative challenging traditional conceptions of piano and pianist which is currently touring internationally. Eve was selected as one of the 25 greatest Canadian classical pianists of all time by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. \nPeggy Baker is acclaimed as one of the most outstanding and influential contemporary dancers of her generation. Her unique abilities are the product of an education in both dance and theatre\, pursued initially through the drama department of the University of Alberta\, with The School of Toronto Dance Theatre\, and in New York at the Martha Graham School and the Herbert Berghof Studio. Born in Edmonton in 1952\, she began her professional career in Toronto in 1974\, as a founding member of Dancemakers\, toured internationally as a prominent member of Lar Lubovitch’s celebrated New York company throughout the eighties\, and joined Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris for the inaugural season of their White Oak Dance Project in 1990\, subsequently forging important creative relationships with Paul-André Fortier (Montreal)\, James Kudelka (Toronto)\, and Doug Varone (New York) through numerous performance projects.

DESCRIPTION:Tradition and Disruption explores some of the opposing and conflicting forces behind the creation of piano music in the classical European tradition from the 17th to the 21st centuries. Through their works\, every composer on this program portrays the co-existence of multiple cultural\, national\, stylistic and geographic elements. In some cases\, as with Bach\, Tajčević\, Chopin or Liszt\, this contrast integrates smoothly with traditional forms and modes of expression; in others\, as in the case of Rachmaninov\, Maksimović and Sokolović\, the disruptive elements strive to break loose from the confines of centuries’ old tradition. \nIn his personal and expressive performing style\, Canadian-Serbian pianist Viktor Lazarov brings to you a recital of his favourite styles: Baroque\, Romantic and Contemporary. DESCRIPTION:Music from the 21st Century written by cellists\, for cellists. The programme will focus on five works by Canadian cellist-composers commissioned by VC2\, each inspired by one of the Beethoven Sonatas for Cello and Piano. These pieces were commissioned for the duo by their former teacher and Albertan cello virtuoso Shauna Rolston-Shaw. Comprised of cellists Amahl Arulanandam and Bryan Holt\, CBC Radio says VC2 is “a tight unit\, with excellent intonation and expression.” They present artistically challenging\, yet accessible programs in venues ranging from intimate cabarets to Roy Thomson Hall. \nAs respected cellists\, they have performed as part of leading music organizations including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra\, Canadian Opera Company Orchestra\, National Ballet of Canada Orchestra\, Soundstreams\, Art of Time Ensemble\, Continuum Contemporary Music\, New Music Concerts\, Music in the Barns\, Thin Edge New Music Collective\, and others. The duo has been featured artists at Ottawa Chamberfest\, Indian River Festival\, Ottawa New Music Creators\, 21C Music Festival\, Ritornello Festival\, and the Prairie Cello Institute. Committed to the creation of new works by living composers\, especially to create works based on the Beethoven Cello Sonatas project. In addition to their performances\, VC2\, with the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council\, recorded these works and in fall 2018\, released the album Beethoven’s Cellists which CBC Radio calls a “First-rate” recording. \nIn February 2018\, VC2 embarked on a tour of the East Coast of Canada\, presented by Debut Atlantic. The duo also spent time summer 2018 at the soundSCAPE performance and composition exchange in Maccagno\, Italy and brought home a number of new works by emerging international composers. VC2 is thrilled to be one of Prairie Debut’s 2019-20 Touring Artists.

DESCRIPTION:Experimental Music for Ensembles\, Drums\, and Electronics | James Harley / Philippe Hode-Keyser \nThis new disc represents decades of musical exploration\, rooted in jazz but pushing far out from that tradition. All of the music is based on notated scores for large ensembles (« big bands ») but improvisation plays a large role. Performances by Hode-Keyser in Montreal of existing music composed in the 1980s by Harley led to two new works composed specially for Hode-Keyser’s Ensemble Kappa. These scores question the jazz tradition through a lense shaped by immersion in European contemporary music\, after Harley had spent six years living in London\, Paris\, and Warsaw.  KappaMusik was premiered at the Open Ears Festival in Kitchener. \nThis CMC presentation will explore the dynamic relationship between notated musical scores and creative interpretation/improvisation. The Cool Hearts Band will perform two versions of Sabbath\, one of the works included on the  CD\, alongside a discussion of the creative process that shaped the project. \nJames Harley is Professor of Music and Critical Studies in Improvisation at the University of Guelph. Compelled to play music that speaks to our time\, she draws from many eras and genres\, performing as a solo artist and collaborator in halls\, museums\, bars\, galleries\, homes\, and castles around the world. In 2017\, she released her first solo album\, Lucid\, a collaboration with three emerging Canadian composers. More recently\, she earned her Master of Music degree under the tutelage of Matt Haimovitz at McGill’s Schulich School of Music. \nOther recent highlights include working with Philip Glass at the Scotia Festival of Music\, winning a Graduate Mobility Award from McGill to perform in Germany\, and holding a fellowship at Garth Newel Music Center in Virginia. India tours regularly with the environmental chamber jazz quartet New Hermitage\, a group which received Music Nova Scotia’s 2019 “Classical Recording of the Year” award for their live improvisation with bass clarinettist Jeff Reilly. Noted as “a young musician to watch” (Scotia Festival)\, India is the recipient of several awards and honours\, including five Nova Scotia Talent Trust scholarships and the Yuh Lih and Marion Kuo Award for Instrumental Excellence.

SUMMARY:In Waves | A Presentation by Darcy Spidle
DESCRIPTION:Just over a decade ago\, Darcy Spidle (aka chik white) moved to West Chezzetcook\, a small coastal village outside of Halifax\, Nova Scotia. Around that time a friend gave him a toy jaw harp as a birthday gift. The harp worked well enough that Spidle became obsessed with playing it\, and he became especially fond of taking it on hikes along the rugged coastline near his home. For Spidle\, jaw harp and the sea have been intertwined ever since\, a fact well documented throughout his substantial discography. \nAs his jaw harp technique advanced\, so did Spidle’s use of ocean recordings. The early recordings are simple: rhythmic drones on the harp and waves pounding in the distance. Later releases involve more abstract engagement with the instrument and increasingly experimental approaches to capturing marine audio—recording from a musical raft adrift at sea\, noisemining magnet tape dredged from the ocean floor\, amplifying hurricane wind\, etc. With his talk at the CMC\, Darcy will attempt to explain the evolution of his work as both a jaw harp player and field recordist. \nAdmission is Free \nIf you cannot join in person\, tune in to the Livestream of the presentation! \nBanner Image Credit: Alex Pearson

SUMMARY:Femmelody: NYC x Toronto
DESCRIPTION:Femmelody Chamber Music Collective is a NYC-based group of women and non-binary musicians performing music by women and non-binary composers of the past and present. Through our concerts and events\, we intend to awaken an awareness of the contributions of women across artistic and professional disciplines that have been historically dismissed. Femmelody CMC had its debut concert in the fall of 2017. \nSince then\, we have established a classical music concert series in Manhattan and Brooklyn. We also host a series of Open Mic Night and Talkbacks that showcases women and LGBTQ+ artists in intimate\, casual settings. We pair these open mic performances with productive and healing conversations surrounding gender and social justice and other related topics. \nNYC x Toronto is the product of a cross-city collaborative artistic effort between early-career women musicians based in both cities throughout 2019. This program of music for flute\, percussion\, violin\, and electronics will feature Canadian premieres of works by Stephanie Orlando (Toronto)\, the Rebecca Gray and Adrienne Scott artistic duo (Toronto)\, and Yael Litwin (NYC)\, as well as other contemporary works by women composers.

Based in Halifax\, NS\, her musical endeavours have brought her to perform and study throughout North America. She has premiered many solo and ensemble pieces while collaborating with a wide range of composers from Canadian emerging artists to internationally renowned such as Steve Reich\, Georg Friedrich Haas and Missy Mazzoli. She is two time competitor in the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Competition and has held fellowships at the Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity\, the Bang On A Can Summer Festival\, the Orford Music Academy\, the Nief-Norf Summer Festival and the Montreal Contemporary Music Labs. \nJustin Paul Ortez is a Michigan-based pianist and composer. As a pianist\, he experiments with ways to disrupt the traditional concert experience in ways that bring lesser performed works of the 20th and 21st centuries to the forefront. He seeks out opportunities to collaborate with composers in all stages of the creative process in an attempt to bring new works to life in a vital\, organic way. Justin has studied and performed at the New England Conservatory’s Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice\, soundSCAPE Composition and Performance Exchange in Maccagno\, Italy\, and WMU’s SPLICE Institute. He has studied primarily under Lori Sims\, as well as with Stephen Drury\, Mabel Kwan\, Thomas Rosenkranz\, Yukiko Takagi\, and Edisher Savitski.

DESCRIPTION:Émergences (f. pl.) – Five New Experimental Works by Canadian Women Composers \nDate: Friday\, August 2\, 2019\nTime: Doors 7:30 pm\, Concert 8:00 pm\nAdmission: PWYC\, suggested $10 students/arts workers\, $15 general\, no one turned away \nCanadian musicians Sara Constant (flutist) and An-Laurence Higgins (guitarist)\, with the Association of Canadian Women Composers (ACWC)\, Innovations en concert\, and the Canadian Music Centre (CMC)\, will present Émergences (f. pl.)—a concert project connecting the work of early-career women composers from Toronto and Montreal. \nFollowing a premiere concert on July 31 at Montreal’s Galerie d’art le Livart\, the group will bring their project to the CMC concert space in Toronto\, where they will present five new works by composers from both cities: Véronique Girard\, Gabrielle Harnois-Blouin\, Shelley Marwood\, Thais Montanari and Lieke van der Voort. \nThe works on the program combine chamber music with electronics\, video\, poetry and movement. Developed in close collaboration with the composers\, the project aims to seek out new\, interdisciplinary working methods for music-making—ones that represent new voices within the Canadian new music community\, and offer models for musical co-creation that disrupt conventional classical music practices. \nWorking to build connections between Francophone and Anglophone spaces in both cities\, Émergences (f. pl.) aims to help open up a space for meeting and listening\, where artists and concertgoers can exchange dialogue on how gender identity in classical music intersects with artistic creation. \nBased in Toronto and Montreal respectively\, Sara Constant and An-Laurence Higgins are both active soloists and ensemble musicians specializing in new/experimental music. They have been collaborating since 2016\, presenting chamber music in Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo and working together as artists-in-residence at the 2018 Waterloo Region Contemporary Music Sessions (WRCMS). This is their first commissioning project as a duo.

Noboyuki’s CVN project emits a searching quality in electronic music. CVN has been published with Orange Milk\, Where To Now?\, and angoisse. He is the curator of the mix series Grey Matter Archives and is editor at the music online magazine AVYSS. \nKOEOSAEME | Koeosaeme is Ryu Yoshizawa’s solo project which pursues the fusion of programming and sound art. From 2004\, he has been a member of the sound artists group “OFFICE INTENZIO” under Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Yukihiro Takahashi. In addition\, he is in charge of live event backup support and recordings for Ryuichi Sakamoto\, Yukihiro Takahashi\, Kyoka and many others. He also produces music commercially for Lotte and Square Enix. \nKOREA TOWN ACID | Toronto based free form beat manipulator Jessica Cho creates swinging dance rhythms that draw from disassembled minimalism\, free jazz and the more avant-garde corners of techno. With a background as a classically trained pianist Cho brings a fresh prospective to the beat driven landscape\, letting seemingly abstract rhythms linger and mingle with moody textures. Her tracks ebbs and flow as electronic pulses\, beats\, and clicks coalesce only to transform once again. Manicured peaks and valleys are dotted with hints of what’s to come. SUMMARY:Bandoneón Masterclass for Composers
DESCRIPTION:The Bandoneon\, mostly known as the “tango accordion\,” is a free reed instrument that was developed in Germany at the end of the 19th century and evolved in Argentinian popular music. Despite of it’s folk connotation the Bandoneón was designed with the polyphonic and expressive criteria found in classical instruments. \nIn the last thirty years the Bandoneón has gained recognition as a concert instrument\, as soloist\, in chamber music\, contemporary and experimental music\, its musical growth and projection goes beyond tango and traditional music and it certainly has great potential for composers nowadays being a very expressive polyphonic instrument with strong presence in ensembles and solo. \nThe lecture will explore the sonorities\, textures\, harmonic\, melodic and polyphonic aspects using both traditional and modern music. The event is oriented to composers or arrangers and composition students from all genres. \nThis is event is free! If you cannot attend in person you can join the livestream. \nAbout Amijai Shalev //  \nAmijai (pronounced Ami-hai) is one of those rare musicians in the bandoneon world who has broken out of the common tango mold to explore the full polyphonic and rhythmic potential of the instrument. Earning his degree from the “Manuel de Falla” Conservatory of Buenos Aires in 2012\, he studied under the tutelage of maestro Rodolfo Daluisio\, the great pioneer of classical and contemporary music for the bandoneon. Following in the footsepts of Maestrol Daluisio\, Amijai has forged a career encompassing the full range of the bandoneon: from solo classical to orchestral works\, from tango to heavy metal compositions. \nPresently\, Amijai performs in the eclectic duo Orquesta Diptica (contemporary tango by Marcelo Lodigiani) and in the jazztango quartet of Julian Graciano. In 2017 he released his instrumental heavy metal recording “Bandolirium” from which the track “Falso Dilema” won first prize in the Nuevos Aires competition for new tango compositions. \nAmijai currently teaches senior students of the J.P Esnaola School of Music in Buenos Aires\, and is the Professor of Bandoneon in two of the main conservatories in the province of Buenos Aires. \nBorn in Canada to a Polish father and Argentine mother\, and raised in Israel\, Amijai has resided in Buenos Aires since 2006. \n  \nAccessibility information: The Canadian Music Centre is an accessible venue through a street level entrance to the right of the main entrance. DESCRIPTION:Canadian cellist Rachel Mercer has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across five continents. Grand prize winner of the 2001 Vriendenkrans Competition in Amsterdam\, Rachel is cellist of Ensemble Made In Canada\, the Mercer-Park Duo\, the AYR Piano Trio\, Artistic Director of the “5 at the First” Chamber Music Series in Hamilton\, and joined the National Arts Centre Orchestra as Associate Principal Cello in January 2016\, winning the Principal chair in 2017. Rachel has given masterclasses across North America\, South Africa and in Israel and is currently Artist-in-Residence at Western University in London ON. An advocate for new Canadian music\, Rachel has commissioned and premiered works including a cello concerto by Kevin Lau\, solo work by Andrew Downing and chamber music by Abigail Richardson-Schulte\, William Rowson\, John Burge and Omar Daniel. Rachel can be heard on the Naxos\, Naxos Canadian Classics\, Centrediscs\, Dalia Classics and EnT-T record labels\, and released a critically acclaimed album of the Bach Suites on Pipistrelle in March 2014\, recorded on the 1696 Bonjour Stradivarius Cello from the Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank.
