SUMMARY:Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan Symposium
DESCRIPTION:An online event hosted by the Canadian Music Centre and Arraymusic\, featuring scholars and practitioners from Indonesia\, Canada\, and the USA. The two online panels will explore these topics on Sunday\, June 5 (June 6 in Indonesia). You are welcome to join in the discussion.\n \nOVERVIEW \n\nIn the 133 years since Claude Debussy\, Maurice Ravel – among many thousands of other Europeans – first encountered Sundanese gamelan\, wayang\, angklung and dance at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle\, the diverse musics of Indonesia has fascinated Western musicians. It was the excitement of first discovering Balinese gamelan music 78 RPM discs that inspired Canadian pianist\, composer and researcher Colin McPhee to move to Bali in the 1930s. His pioneering work has inspired many others to study and more recently to perform on gamelan.Around 1960 gamelan courses began to be offered in universities in the US\, and in Canada on the heels of Expo ’86 Vancouver the site of the First International Gamelan Festival and Symposium. These developments had several long-term impacts on a small cadre of American composers. It provided them hands-on opportunities to learn these musical cultures\, as well as serving to embed composers and performers from various Indonesian regions in American academic and artistic circles. The first gamelan group in the country\, Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan (ECCG) has pioneered a Canadian approach to exploring hybrid links between post-classical and world music. Founded in 1983\, this professional eight-musician Toronto cooperative plays its own bespoke West Javanese-style degung. Its mandate includes commissioning new works by Canadian and international composers\, as well as presenting new interpretations of Sundanese music. ECCG has a long history of inviting Sundanese and Javanese musicians\, composers\, puppeteers and dancers to work with the group live and in the recording studio. In 2002 ECCG toured three cities in Java with a Toronto-based modern dance company performing and engaging in workshops. What ethical issues arise in such cultural and professional interactions? For example\, what is ECCG’s relationship to Toronto’s Indonesian community and to musicians and music scenes in Indonesia? What do Indonesian musicians think of ECCG and other “outsider” groups playing various types of gamelan? What are the many-facetted implications of playing – and creating gamelan music – outside its region of origin?Jointly organized by ECCG\, Arraymusic\, and the Canadian Music Centre\, this online symposium will begin to engage these questions and explore the broader context of Evergreen’s pioneering work. Featuring practitioners and scholars from Indonesia\, Canada and the USA\, this symposium seeks to plumb the current state of international gamelan music creation today and in the future. \n\n  \n\n\nSCHEDULE \n\n\nJune 5th 7:00pm to 8:30pm EDT – 4:00pm to 5:30 pm PDT – June 6th 7:00am to 8:30am WITA \n\n\nRoots and Offshoots – Gamelan in contemporary Indonesian music \n\n\nLINK \n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\nArya Deva Suryanegara (Bali/Canada)\, composer\, performer – Université de Montreal\nIwan Gunawan (West Java) composer\, musician\, music educator\, gamelan leader – Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia\, Bandung\nSutrisnoHartana (Central Java/Canada)\, composer\, musician\, music educator\, researcher – Simon Fraser University\nPutuHiranmayena (Bali/United States)\, composer\, musician\, musicologist – Grinnell College\nModerator: Jody Diamond\, American Gamelan Institute\n\n\n\n\n8:30pm EST to 9:00pm EST – Break\n\n\n\nJune 5th 9:00pm to 10:30pm EDT – 6:00pm to 7:30 pm PDT – June 6th 9:00am to 10:30am WITA \n\n\nLost in Translation? SUMMARY:Reimagining
DESCRIPTION:Reimagining | a concert of new works for accordion & clarinet \nThe culmination of a multi-year project sees Joseph Petric (accordion) and Martin Carpentier (clarinet) perform new duo works developed by an international roster of composers. New relationships\, formed in the creation of each piece\, serve to refract and re-imagine their instruments\, their role\, function\, contexts and interpretive possibilities. The programme will hint at ambiguity\, vulnerability\, and fresh artistic perspectives offered by the confounding of expectation. \nBoth Petric and Carpentier have pursued careers as champions of process\, challenging orthodoxies while embracing the nexus of memory\, aesthetics\, and understanding achieved through their performance practice. \nHere reimagining is a renewal of process\, embedded within each new creation. \nThis concert will be presented as a livestream. Audiences can join through the CMC livestream event\, on this page \nConcert Programme | \nTransonique\, Gabriel Mălăncioiu – ROM \nBiarc\, Kathryn Knowles – CAD \nfoxred\, Daryl Jamieson – CAD/JAP \nmás tranquila (for pauline)\, D. Edward Davis – USA \nKinamulaìtan\, Juro Kim Feliz – PP/CAD \nMore about the programme | Juro Kim Feliz (PP-CAD) offers a traditional\, almost modernist rigour in the writing\, yet confounds expectation with lyricism\, and warm textural soundscapes; Gabriel Mălăncioiu (ROM)  offers an Eastern European perspective of the clarinet and accordion tinged with Stravinskian impulses; Kathryn Knowles  (CAD) offers a work which confounds expectation with episodic excursions; Edward Davis (USA) draws on the Conjunto accordion tradition with warmth and episodic declarations\, tinged by (and dedicated to) Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening traditions; Daryl Jamieson (JAP-CAD) delivers a transparent and ethereal work that triggers internalized and ritualized spaces. \nTechnical Personnel | \n\nAudio recording\, Peter Lutek \nGraphics\, Nigel Baines \n\n\nPerformer Biographies \nJoseph Petric\, photo credit: Bo Huang \nJoseph Petric |Joseph Petric’s staunchly individualistic approach as concert and recording artist has drawn return engagements to Asia\, Europe\, Scandinavia\, United Kingdom\, the former Soviet bloc\, North America and the Middle East. SUMMARY:Chris Pruden's Suns
DESCRIPTION:Suns is a set of solo piano improvisations and compositions performed by Toronto pianist Chris Pruden. \nWhile already recognized as a notable Canadian pianist/keyboardist in several projects (Tara Kannangara\, Sammy Jackson\, Zinnia\, Future Machines\, Language Arts)\, this is the first release under his own name. \nSuns\, released on Elastic Recordings\, is refreshingly informal\, recorded amongst friends\, documenting unfinished thoughts and new reflections in the moments they arrive and depart. Pruden exhibits technical and musical control that is always on the edge\, tumbling through insecurities and surrendering to the sound of the moment. It is both meditative and frenetic\, playful and serious\, vulnerable and resilient. \nThe seven pieces take influences from the music of György Ligeti\, Sun Ra\, Cecil Taylor\, Unsuk Chin\, Ann Southam\, and Elliott Carter (whose piano piece Catenaires is featured as a final track). \nThe album launch will feature a performance from Chris\, and a set of music from Yunjin Claire Lee. The event will be live streamed. No tickets will be made available publicly. \n\n\n\nChris Pruden Bio & Music \nChris Pruden is a pianist/keyboardist based in Toronto\, ON. Heavily influenced by jazz\, contemporary classical\, folk\, rock and electronic music\, Chris has performed across North America\, China\, and Europe. He is a frequent sideman and collaborator with Tara Kannangara\, Sammy Jackson\, Zinnia\, Language Arts\, Future Machines\, and Ronley Teper's Lipliners. \nYunjin Claire Lee Bio & Music \n \nYunjin Claire Lee is a Korean Canadian pianist\, keyboardist\, sound designer\, composer and producer; a sought-after collaborator for creating electrifying soundscapes. She has worked on local and international projects in an extensive range of genres including traditional and avant-garde jazz\, contemporary classical\, musique concrète\, ambient techno\, synthwave\, and pop.   \nHer debut album Voluntary Response (2020) – a solo piano improvisation recordings weaved with electronic processing via Rabid Elephant's prototype synth\, gained her an international fanbase in the experimental music scene. Her ambient electronic singles Underwater Arcade (2020) and Dive (2021) had been featured on radio stations across the country such as CJSW 90.9 FM\, CKUT 90.3 FM\, CITR 101.9 FM\, and CHMA 106.9 FM. \nIn October 2021\, she was featured on Discover Women in Jazz series on JAZZ.FM91\, showcasing a new electro-acoustic duo with Ben Grossman on hurdy-gurdy. They are currently working on a new album to be released in 2022. \nPhoto credit: Brendan Mariani \nDive by Yunjin Claire Lee\nAbout Elastic Recordings \nElastic Recordings is the co-creation of Canadian vibraphonist\, Michael Davidson\, and Canadian double bassist\, Dan Fortin. It is a collective outlet exploring the spaces where composition and improvisation overlap; the points at which nostalgia meets the present moment.   \nThe label will promote music that fits between the gaps of genre and that has been historically difficult to classify.\n \nFollow Elastic Recordings | Instagram\, Twitter

SUMMARY:Hanging by a Thread
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Music Centre will host Hanging By a Thread\, the inaugural virtual production by Toronto new vocal music concert series\, Slow Rise Music. Slow Rise Music was founded by musicians McKenzie Warriner and Tristan Zaba in 2021 to break new ground in classical performance and\, by showcasing the human voice in contexts different and arguably more relevant than traditional operatic or choral presentations\, improve access and give new life to the art form. \nHanging by a Thread features works from three composers: Isaac Zee\, a Vancouver-based composer/violinist from Hong Kong; Anika France Forget\, a UK-based Franco-Ontarian composer/vocalist; and Tristan Zaba\, a composer/vocalist/rock musician originally from Alberta. Each piece explores the theme of “survival\,” on commissioned texts by Canadian poets Pamela Galloway\, Aude A. Saint-Laurent\, and Tristan Zaba. \n\nIn keeping with the Slow Rise mission\, Hanging By a Thread explores multi-instrumentalism—the concept of players singing and playing instruments simultaneously\, which is common in popular music but unusual in classical presentations. All pieces will be performed by co-founders McKenzie Warriner on soprano voice and piano\, and Tristan Zaba on bass voice and electric guitar. Hanging by a Thread will take place live on YouTube. There is no charge to view aside from an optional donation to Slow Rise Music’s gofundme campaign. \n\nProgramme \nÀ vol d’oiseau | Anika-France Forget (composer)\, Aude A. SUMMARY:Wounded Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Wounded Landscapes is the culmination of nearly three years of collaboration between pianists Megan Thibeault (Halifax)\, Justin Paul Ortez (Michigan)\, and composer Cory Harper-Latkovich (Toronto). The result is three new works for piano: two solo works which evoke each respective pianist’s sensibilities as an artist\, and one piano duo which synthesizes elements of the solo works. \nSocieties of Solitude written with Megan Thibeault is a suite of shorter pieces which are individually unique in tone and energy and represent Thibeault’s own dynamic style as a performer. \nWounded Landscapes written with Justin Paul Ortez on the other hand\, is a large piece that stretches the perception of time and form and reflects Ortez’s own patience and focus as a performer. \nevocation\, Intimacy takes elements of the two solo pieces and presents them in a performance which reflects the ritual of collaboration that created itself: solitude\, coming together\, intense focus\, improvisation\, creation.

Listen online live or via audiofile (download) during sunset and/or sunrise\, using good quality loudspeakers\, headphones or earbuds. \n\nAbout the Piece | Music for Incandescent Events meditates our perception of time\, memory and place\, creating a space for contemplation\, for awareness of one’s physical environment\, and for exploration of consciousness in the moment.\n\n\nEach iteration of Incandescent Events combines different improvised short melodies and tones performed on a slightly de-tuned shô (Japanese mouth-organ)\, re-recorded several octaves lower than original pitch. I recorded these melodies at very close range while sitting near a reflective wall\, catching rich beat patterns and sum/difference tones. These and additional frequencies beyond the range of human hearing transform into unexpected\, complex audio events at slower play-back speeds\, several octaves down. \nMusic for Incandescent Events version 1 (2002) is published on Somethings #1 (Last Visible Dog). Version 2 (installation) was commissioned by wade Collective for wade project in June\, 2004\, for Gibraltar Point\, Toronto Islands; it showed at the McLuhan International Festival of the Future\, “Scanning Nature” exhibition October\, 2004 (DeLeon White Gallery rooftop deck. Version no. 3\, Colour Temperature Event (for Gabriola Island\, Berry Point\, 2017)\, was curated for The QR Anthology \n\n~ Sarah Peebles

SUMMARY:Mistress Class Summer 2020
DESCRIPTION:A series of presentations and discussions that centre the experience and knowledge of women\, trans\, and non-binary identified artists in music. \nThe Mistress Class works to create a respectful space for building knowledge and community\, and seeks to disrupt both the narrative and the form of the traditional master class. \nThe Summer 2020 webinars are free to attend! Participants can register for individual sessions\, or for the full series. In order to make these sessions available to more participants\, we will be hosting them as Zoom webinars. The chat will be available during sessions for attendees to communicate with each other and with the organizers. We also invite participants to share questions in advance to help guide each discussion. \nClass 1: Sound Advice | Sage Kim\, Heather Kirby\nWednesday\, August 5\, 4:00-5:30 EDT \nWorkshop attendees sit in on sessions with mastering engineers\, learn about the software and hardware they use\, the differences between the creative and technical aspects of their work\, and the collaborative spaces between artist and engineer. \nClass 2: Gear and Studio Tours | Lisa Conway (L CON)\, Vanese Smith (Pursuit Grooves)\, Maylee Todd\nWednesday\, August 12\, 4:00-5:30 EDT \nGuest artists show us around the space(s) where they create and record music\, and the tools they use to do so (instruments\, hardware\, software). Counter to the idea that there is only one correct (read expensive) professional studio set-up\, we are interested in how artists are creative and resourceful–with space\, with gear\, with knowledge. \nClass 3: Health and Wellness | Beth Pickens\nWednesday\, August 19\, 4:00-5:30 EDT \nA therapeutic professional who specializes in working with artists explores what it means to do creative work during a pandemic. What is the toll? What is the reward? How can we take care of ourselves and use our skills to help take care of others? How do we understand the meaning and importance of our work in a time of pandemic and of political upheaval? This session may also feature a guest artist. \nClass 4: Writing and Composing | Kinnie Starr\nWednesday\, August 26\, 4:00-5:30pm EDT \nOur guest artist discusses her writing process: where it starts\, where it ends\, what happens in between; how it has changed over the course of her career; when it feels good\, when it hurts; what ignites her; what frustrates her. We also discuss how her writing process has changed (or not) over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. \nAccessibility | If there are any needs that you would like organizers to be aware of please contact matthew.fava@cmccanada.org\, or include a comment during your registration through Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:A Thread of Sand: music from the studio of Ann Southam
DESCRIPTION:of-the-now: Archipelago presents a portrait of Ann Southam’s electronic music\, in partnership with the Canadian Music Centre. Featuring The Reprieve (1983) and the previously unreleased A Thread of Sand (1972)\, we will delve into her music in conversation with pianist Eve Egoyan and dancer/choreographer Peggy Baker about their relationships with the composer and her works. \nWe are excited to share previously unreleased footage of Eve and Ann rehearsing\, as well as Peggy Baker’s piece Strand\, set to Ann’s music. You can join the livestream at of-the-now.ca \nof-the-now : Archipelago is conceived like a small venue or house concert series\, with a suggested $10 or PWYC at the door. Please consider donating if you are able. All proceeds go to the artists involved. \nAbout the Artists | \nAnn Southam was born in Winnipeg\, Manitoba in 1937 but lived most of her life in Toronto. After completing musical studies at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music in the early 1960’s\, Ann Southam began a teaching and composing career which included a long and productive association with modern dance. As well as creating music for some of Canada’s major modern dance companies and choreographers including The Toronto Dance Theatre\, Danny Grossman\, Dancemakers\, Patricia Beatty\, Christopher House and Rachel Browne\, she was an instructor in electronic music at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and has also participated in many “composer-in-the-classroom” programs in elementary and high schools. While a great deal of her work was electroacoustic music on tape\, in her later years she became increasingly interested in music for acoustic instruments. She composed concert music for a variety of acoustic instruments and instrumental ensembles\, working with such artists and ensembles as Eve Egoyan\, Christina Petrowska Quilico and Arraymusic. Ann Southam’s work was commissioned through the Canada Council\, the Ontario Arts Council\, and the CBC\, and has been performed in Canada\, Europe and the U.S. She is a member of the Canadian Music Centre\, the Canadian League of Composers and a founding member of the Association of Canadian Women Composers. She was the recipient of the Friends of Canadian Music Award in 2001. Ann Southam passed away November 25\, 2010. \nEve Egoyan is an artist whose medium is the piano. Her intense focus\, command of the instrument\, insightful interpretations\, and unique programmes welcome audiences into unknown territory. Her recordings have received accolades including “Best Classical”\, The Globe and Mail (1999)\, for her first solo CD\, and one of “Ten Top” classical discs\, The New Yorker magazine (2009)\, and “Top Classical Disc of the Year”\, The Globe and Mail (2011). Eve’s recent releases include Thought and Desire\, works by Linda Catlin Smith\, and De Puro Amor / En Amor Duro\, Maria de Alvear’s epic diptych. Recent touring includes solo recitals at the following festivals: Transart\, Italy; Klangspuren\, Austria; the Huddersfield Festival\, U.K.; and the Modulus Festival\, Vancouver\, Canada. Eve’s most recent project\, SOLO FOR DUET\, is a deeply integrated virtuosic mix of sound\, image\, and unspoken narrative challenging traditional conceptions of piano and pianist which is currently touring internationally. Eve was selected as one of the 25 greatest Canadian classical pianists of all time by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. \nPeggy Baker is acclaimed as one of the most outstanding and influential contemporary dancers of her generation. Her unique abilities are the product of an education in both dance and theatre\, pursued initially through the drama department of the University of Alberta\, with The School of Toronto Dance Theatre\, and in New York at the Martha Graham School and the Herbert Berghof Studio. Born in Edmonton in 1952\, she began her professional career in Toronto in 1974\, as a founding member of Dancemakers\, toured internationally as a prominent member of Lar Lubovitch’s celebrated New York company throughout the eighties\, and joined Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris for the inaugural season of their White Oak Dance Project in 1990\, subsequently forging important creative relationships with Paul-André Fortier (Montreal)\, James Kudelka (Toronto)\, and Doug Varone (New York) through numerous performance projects.

SUMMARY:Tradition & Disruption
DESCRIPTION:Tradition and Disruption explores some of the opposing and conflicting forces behind the creation of piano music in the classical European tradition from the 17th to the 21st centuries. Through their works\, every composer on this program portrays the co-existence of multiple cultural\, national\, stylistic and geographic elements. In some cases\, as with Bach\, Tajčević\, Chopin or Liszt\, this contrast integrates smoothly with traditional forms and modes of expression; in others\, as in the case of Rachmaninov\, Maksimović and Sokolović\, the disruptive elements strive to break loose from the confines of centuries’ old tradition. \nIn his personal and expressive performing style\, Canadian-Serbian pianist Viktor Lazarov brings to you a recital of his favourite styles: Baroque\, Romantic and Contemporary. In his original programmes\, Lazarov continues to champion the music inspired by Balkan themes\, such as the works of composers Marko Tajčević\, Svetlana Maksimović and Ana Sokolović. \nTime / Doors 7:30 pm\, Concert 8:00 pm \nTickets / $25 General\, $15 Senior/Student \nProgramme / \nJ.S. Bach\, Prelude and Fugue in f-sharp minor BWV 883\nMarko Tajčević\, Seven Balkan Dances\nFrédéric Chopin\, Nocturne op. 27 no. 2 in D-flat major & Nocturne op. 9 no. 1 in B-flat minor\nSerguëi Rachmaninov\, Etude op.39 no. 5 in E-flat minor\nSvetlana Maksimović\, Three Choreographic Etudes\nAna Sokolović\, Danses et Interludes\nFranz Liszt\, Paraphrase on Themes from Rigoletto

SUMMARY:KappaMusik Crossing
DESCRIPTION:Experimental Music for Ensembles\, Drums\, and Electronics | James Harley / Philippe Hode-Keyser \nThis new disc represents decades of musical exploration\, rooted in jazz but pushing far out from that tradition. All of the music is based on notated scores for large ensembles (« big bands ») but improvisation plays a large role. Performances by Hode-Keyser in Montreal of existing music composed in the 1980s by Harley led to two new works composed specially for Hode-Keyser’s Ensemble Kappa. These scores question the jazz tradition through a lense shaped by immersion in European contemporary music\, after Harley had spent six years living in London\, Paris\, and Warsaw.  KappaMusik was premiered at the Open Ears Festival in Kitchener. \nThis CMC presentation will explore the dynamic relationship between notated musical scores and creative interpretation/improvisation. The Cool Hearts Band will perform two versions of Sabbath\, one of the works included on the  CD\, alongside a discussion of the creative process that shaped the project. \nJames Harley is Professor of Music and Critical Studies in Improvisation at the University of Guelph. Philippe Hode-Keyser is a musician and band-leader in Montreal. \nAdmission Free* \nTime / 2:00-4:00 pm / Doors at 1:30 pm \n*Audience members who make a $20 donation to the CMC during advanced registration or at the door will receive a free copy of the album courtesy of the artist.
