DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Music Centre\, in collaboration with the Canadian League of Composers\, is pleased to announce Rivers (re-imagined): a monthly series of presentations and hands-on professional development workshops for composers. \nThese will be in-person events at the Canadian Music Centre’s Performance Space in Toronto\, and they will be available for online streaming to ensure access for composers right across the country. Topics will include: grants\, funding\, and project management; contracts and licensing agreements; publicity and marketing; music technology; music education\, and others. \nThe workshops will provide concrete guidance and clear\, hands-on training for common professional scenarios encountered by the membership of both organizations\, and they will be free to both Associate Composers of the CMC\, as well as members of the CLC. \n———————————————————————————————————————————– \nOur first presentation/workshop will take place on Wednesday\, October 19\, 2022\, at 5:30. Members of ContaQt New Music will discuss and demonstrate the aesthetic and technical elements of online rehearsal and collaboration. \nLike many ensembles at the onset of the initial pandemic lockdowns\, ContaQt was faced with discovering new ways to musically engage with each other and audiences. Led by the research and experimentation of Jerry Pergolesi and Andrew Noseworthy\, and with technological facilitation by Jeff Morton\, and online performance mentoring with Tina Pearson\, we developed a means to play together in real-time from our isolated locations using a combination of digital audio workstations and the audio transmitter plugin\, AudioMovers’ ListenTo. \nThrough this process\, we became more integrated as a performing group than ever before and extended our artistic practice in ways that benefited our expanding repertoire that includes music by Brian Eno\, original compositions\, and improvisations. This music also embraces and engages with latency that is inherent to the internet. This workshop will demonstrate the potential for this performance practice and the possibilities for collaboration using this high-fidelity means of audio transmission.

Inspired by lambe lambe – South American miniature puppet stages for a single viewer – four distinct dioramas convey surreal yet enlightening worlds where bees lounge in cozy environs\, animals watch educational films and ethereal sounds animate bowls of berries (having been pollinated by their diverse bee visitors). Displays reminiscent of natural history museums invite close inspection\, revealing minutiae of these tiny\, diverse animals\, our native bees. From thumb-sized to extremely tiny\, fuzzy to hairless\, black\, yellow\, red or emerald green\, each native bee tells a story while her actions create the fruits of pollination\, reflecting the perpetual dance of animals\, plants and planet. Cassette Tapes and Creative Practice \nIn this workshop\, post-digital saxophonist Greg Bruce will discuss his philosophy surrounding cassette tapes and demonstrate how he uses them in his musical practice. Greg will begin by discussing how we can think about physical electronic media and the importance of materiality in music making. Following this\, he will cover the fundamentals of cassette tapes: the glory of wow and flutter\, the differences between cassette types\, and what tapes\, players\, and recorders to look out for (among other topics). \nNext\, Greg will demonstrate the wide range of creative uses for a simple cassette recorder. This portion of the workshop will show participants how to make several types of tape loops and demonstrate various recording and playback techniques. The two online panels will explore these topics on Sunday\, June 5 (June 6 in Indonesia). You are welcome to join in the discussion.\n \nOVERVIEW \n\nIn the 133 years since Claude Debussy\, Maurice Ravel – among many thousands of other Europeans – first encountered Sundanese gamelan\, wayang\, angklung and dance at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle\, the diverse musics of Indonesia has fascinated Western musicians. It was the excitement of first discovering Balinese gamelan music 78 RPM discs that inspired Canadian pianist\, composer and researcher Colin McPhee to move to Bali in the 1930s. His pioneering work has inspired many others to study and more recently to perform on gamelan.Around 1960 gamelan courses began to be offered in universities in the US\, and in Canada on the heels of Expo ’86 Vancouver the site of the First International Gamelan Festival and Symposium. These developments had several long-term impacts on a small cadre of American composers. It provided them hands-on opportunities to learn these musical cultures\, as well as serving to embed composers and performers from various Indonesian regions in American academic and artistic circles.The first gamelan group in the country\, Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan (ECCG) has pioneered a Canadian approach to exploring hybrid links between post-classical and world music. Founded in 1983\, this professional eight-musician Toronto cooperative plays its own bespoke West Javanese-style degung. Its mandate includes commissioning new works by Canadian and international composers\, as well as presenting new interpretations of Sundanese music. ECCG has a long history of inviting Sundanese and Javanese musicians\, composers\, puppeteers and dancers to work with the group live and in the recording studio. In 2002 ECCG toured three cities in Java with a Toronto-based modern dance company performing and engaging in workshops. What ethical issues arise in such cultural and professional interactions? For example\, what is ECCG’s relationship to Toronto’s Indonesian community and to musicians and music scenes in Indonesia? What do Indonesian musicians think of ECCG and other “outsider” groups playing various types of gamelan? Maintaining an active concert and recording schedule he has appeared as a soloist at major venues such as Seiji Ozawa Hall\, BBC Radio3\, Washington’s Kennedy Center\, the Berlin Philharmonic\, and at international festivals London Southbank\, IRCAM Agora\, Tanglewood\, and Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Festival. He went on to serve as Principal Clarinet with the Orchestre des jeunes du Québec. After studying under Karl Leister (Principal Clarinet with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra) in 1992 and subsequently obtained his Master’s Degree in Performance from the Université de Montréal\, under the supervision of André Moisan.A highly sought-after clarinetist\, Martin Carpentier is a member of Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM) and of Pentaèdre. In addition to the decisive influence of Maestro Remus Georgescu – the one who initiated him in the study of musical composition\, during his master's and doctoral studies at the Gheorghe Dima National Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca\, he met important personalities such as Cornel Ţăranu\, Adrian Pop\, Valentin Timaru and Eduard Tereny. \nGabriel Mălăncioiu's music has been presented to audiences on five continents in over 270 concerts\, performed by prestigious ensembles such as Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart\, the Slovenian Chamber Choir or the Aventure ensemble\, by performers such as Florian Mueller\, Gudrun Hinze or Richard Craig\, by conductors such as Michael Wendeberg\, Huba Hollókői or Martina Batič. Composer Corneliu Dan Georgescu remarked that Gabriel Mălăncioiu is "one of the most active personalities\, a confident and very original voice in the contemporary musical landscape". Gabriel Mălăncioiu is currently teaching Modern composition techniques\, Orchestration and Musical Analysis at the West University of Timişoara\, Faculty of Music and Theater. \nKathryn Knowles | Kathryn Knowles is a composer\, cellist\, conductor\, and writer from Inverary\, Ontario and currently based in Toronto\, Ontario. Her musical works have been played in workshops by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra\, the New Orford String Quartet\, and the Penderecki String Quartet.  \nKathryn is interested in multidisciplinary artistic exchange\, and in exploring the creative process. He studied at Wilfrid Laurier University with Glenn Buhr and Linda Catlin Smith\, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Diana Burrell\, and then with Nicola LeFanu at the University of York. He has lived in Japan since 2006\, first studying under Jo Kondo at the Tokyo University of the Arts. He is currently an assistant professor of composition at Kyushu University\, and his music is published by Da Vinci Edition\, Osaka\, and the Canadian Music Centre. \nJamieson's work explores time and place\, and is heavily influenced by nō theatre and Japanese poetry. One of his largest works is a trilogy of musical theatre pieces called the Vanitas \nSeries\, which received the 2018 Toshi Ichiyanagi Contemporary Prize. In his citation\, Ichiyanagi called the Vanitas Series 'an epic musical work of extraordinarily elegance and contemporary topical perspective'. Jamieson's other pieces include solo\, chamber and orchestral works\, and many songs. Since 2016 he has begun to incorporate field recordings and site-specific projects into his work\, particularly in his ongoing utamakura and Decants series. His music has been performed around the world by many artists\, including the Quatuor Bozzini\, the Thin Edge New Music Collective\, Muromachi Ensemble\, and Satoko Inoue. \nHe founded the intercultural musical theatre company Atelier Jaku in 2013. He is also active as a researcher\, writing on aesthetics of the Kyoto School and Buddhist philosophy\, as well as contemporary music and spirituality. Edward Davis is a composer whose work engages with the sounds of the environment\, exploring processes\, patterns\, and systems inspired by nature. DESCRIPTION:Suns is a set of solo piano improvisations and compositions performed by Toronto pianist Chris Pruden. \nWhile already recognized as a notable Canadian pianist/keyboardist in several projects (Tara Kannangara\, Sammy Jackson\, Zinnia\, Future Machines\, Language Arts)\, this is the first release under his own name. \nSuns\, released on Elastic Recordings\, is refreshingly informal\, recorded amongst friends\, documenting unfinished thoughts and new reflections in the moments they arrive and depart. Pruden exhibits technical and musical control that is always on the edge\, tumbling through insecurities and surrendering to the sound of the moment. It is both meditative and frenetic\, playful and serious\, vulnerable and resilient. \nThe seven pieces take influences from the music of György Ligeti\, Sun Ra\, Cecil Taylor\, Unsuk Chin\, Ann Southam\, and Elliott Carter (whose piano piece Catenaires is featured as a final track). \nThe album launch will feature a performance from Chris\, and a set of music from Yunjin Claire Lee. She has worked on local and international projects in an extensive range of genres including traditional and avant-garde jazz\, contemporary classical\, musique concrète\, ambient techno\, synthwave\, and pop.   \nHer debut album Voluntary Response (2020) – a solo piano improvisation recordings weaved with electronic processing via Rabid Elephant's prototype synth\, gained her an international fanbase in the experimental music scene. Her ambient electronic singles Underwater Arcade (2020) and Dive (2021) had been featured on radio stations across the country such as CJSW 90.9 FM\, CKUT 90.3 FM\, CITR 101.9 FM\, and CHMA 106.9 FM. \nIn October 2021\, she was featured on Discover Women in Jazz series on JAZZ.FM91\, showcasing a new electro-acoustic duo with Ben Grossman on hurdy-gurdy. DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Music Centre will host Hanging By a Thread\, the inaugural virtual production by Toronto new vocal music concert series\, Slow Rise Music. Slow Rise Music was founded by musicians McKenzie Warriner and Tristan Zaba in 2021 to break new ground in classical performance and\, by showcasing the human voice in contexts different and arguably more relevant than traditional operatic or choral presentations\, improve access and give new life to the art form. \nHanging by a Thread features works from three composers: Isaac Zee\, a Vancouver-based composer/violinist from Hong Kong; Anika France Forget\, a UK-based Franco-Ontarian composer/vocalist; and Tristan Zaba\, a composer/vocalist/rock musician originally from Alberta. Each piece explores the theme of “survival\,” on commissioned texts by Canadian poets Pamela Galloway\, Aude A. Saint-Laurent\, and Tristan Zaba. \n\nIn keeping with the Slow Rise mission\, Hanging By a Thread explores multi-instrumentalism—the concept of players singing and playing instruments simultaneously\, which is common in popular music but unusual in classical presentations. All pieces will be performed by co-founders McKenzie Warriner on soprano voice and piano\, and Tristan Zaba on bass voice and electric guitar. Hanging by a Thread will take place live on YouTube. SUMMARY:Wounded Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Wounded Landscapes is the culmination of nearly three years of collaboration between pianists Megan Thibeault (Halifax)\, Justin Paul Ortez (Michigan)\, and composer Cory Harper-Latkovich (Toronto). The result is three new works for piano: two solo works which evoke each respective pianist’s sensibilities as an artist\, and one piano duo which synthesizes elements of the solo works. \nSocieties of Solitude written with Megan Thibeault is a suite of shorter pieces which are individually unique in tone and energy and represent Thibeault’s own dynamic style as a performer. \nWounded Landscapes written with Justin Paul Ortez on the other hand\, is a large piece that stretches the perception of time and form and reflects Ortez’s own patience and focus as a performer. \nevocation\, Intimacy takes elements of the two solo pieces and presents them in a performance which reflects the ritual of collaboration that created itself: solitude\, coming together\, intense focus\, improvisation\, creation.

DESCRIPTION:of-the-now: Archipelago presents a portrait of Ann Southam’s electronic music\, in partnership with the Canadian Music Centre. Featuring The Reprieve (1983) and the previously unreleased A Thread of Sand (1972)\, we will delve into her music in conversation with pianist Eve Egoyan and dancer/choreographer Peggy Baker about their relationships with the composer and her works. \nWe are excited to share previously unreleased footage of Eve and Ann rehearsing\, as well as Peggy Baker’s piece Strand\, set to Ann’s music. Please consider donating if you are able. All proceeds go to the artists involved. \nAbout the Artists | \nAnn Southam was born in Winnipeg\, Manitoba in 1937 but lived most of her life in Toronto. After completing musical studies at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music in the early 1960’s\, Ann Southam began a teaching and composing career which included a long and productive association with modern dance. As well as creating music for some of Canada’s major modern dance companies and choreographers including The Toronto Dance Theatre\, Danny Grossman\, Dancemakers\, Patricia Beatty\, Christopher House and Rachel Browne\, she was an instructor in electronic music at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and has also participated in many “composer-in-the-classroom” programs in elementary and high schools. While a great deal of her work was electroacoustic music on tape\, in her later years she became increasingly interested in music for acoustic instruments. She composed concert music for a variety of acoustic instruments and instrumental ensembles\, working with such artists and ensembles as Eve Egoyan\, Christina Petrowska Quilico and Arraymusic. Ann Southam’s work was commissioned through the Canada Council\, the Ontario Arts Council\, and the CBC\, and has been performed in Canada\, Europe and the U.S. She is a member of the Canadian Music Centre\, the Canadian League of Composers and a founding member of the Association of Canadian Women Composers. She was the recipient of the Friends of Canadian Music Award in 2001. Ann Southam passed away November 25\, 2010. \nEve Egoyan is an artist whose medium is the piano. Her intense focus\, command of the instrument\, insightful interpretations\, and unique programmes welcome audiences into unknown territory. Her recordings have received accolades including “Best Classical”\, The Globe and Mail (1999)\, for her first solo CD\, and one of “Ten Top” classical discs\, The New Yorker magazine (2009)\, and “Top Classical Disc of the Year”\, The Globe and Mail (2011). Eve’s recent releases include Thought and Desire\, works by Linda Catlin Smith\, and De Puro Amor / En Amor Duro\, Maria de Alvear’s epic diptych. Recent touring includes solo recitals at the following festivals: Transart\, Italy; Klangspuren\, Austria; the Huddersfield Festival\, U.K.; and the Modulus Festival\, Vancouver\, Canada. Eve’s most recent project\, SOLO FOR DUET\, is a deeply integrated virtuosic mix of sound\, image\, and unspoken narrative challenging traditional conceptions of piano and pianist which is currently touring internationally. Eve was selected as one of the 25 greatest Canadian classical pianists of all time by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. \nPeggy Baker is acclaimed as one of the most outstanding and influential contemporary dancers of her generation. Her unique abilities are the product of an education in both dance and theatre\, pursued initially through the drama department of the University of Alberta\, with The School of Toronto Dance Theatre\, and in New York at the Martha Graham School and the Herbert Berghof Studio. Born in Edmonton in 1952\, she began her professional career in Toronto in 1974\, as a founding member of Dancemakers\, toured internationally as a prominent member of Lar Lubovitch’s celebrated New York company throughout the eighties\, and joined Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris for the inaugural season of their White Oak Dance Project in 1990\, subsequently forging important creative relationships with Paul-André Fortier (Montreal)\, James Kudelka (Toronto)\, and Doug Varone (New York) through numerous performance projects.

SUMMARY:Tradition & Disruption
DESCRIPTION:Tradition and Disruption explores some of the opposing and conflicting forces behind the creation of piano music in the classical European tradition from the 17th to the 21st centuries. Through their works\, every composer on this program portrays the co-existence of multiple cultural\, national\, stylistic and geographic elements. In some cases\, as with Bach\, Tajčević\, Chopin or Liszt\, this contrast integrates smoothly with traditional forms and modes of expression; in others\, as in the case of Rachmaninov\, Maksimović and Sokolović\, the disruptive elements strive to break loose from the confines of centuries’ old tradition. \nIn his personal and expressive performing style\, Canadian-Serbian pianist Viktor Lazarov brings to you a recital of his favourite styles: Baroque\, Romantic and Contemporary.
