Emerging Toronto-based guitarist and composer Dipo Adeola extends a classic jazz approach into new and unexpected territory. Montreal-based Rodrigo Simões blends Brazillian music with jazz to acheive something greater than the sum of its parts. \n— \nRodrigo Simões is a composer with a distinctive style that oscillates between Brazilian music and jazz improvisation. His international career has taken him to China\, Australia\, South Korea\, Paraguay\, and the United States\, in addition to his native Brazil and his adopted country\, Canada. The guitarist has collaborated with major artists in Brazil (Elza Soares\, Carlos Malta\, Paulinho da Viola\, Dominguinhos\, Zeca Baleiro\, and Paulo Moska) and in Canada (Bill McBirnie\, Joel Miller\, Sienna Dahlen\, Alex Lefaivre\, Sonia Johnson\, Mark Nelson\, Carl Mayotte\, Daniel Bellegarde\, Rémi Bolduc\, and Jean-Pierre Zanella). In 2013\, his first album ‘Aos Velhos Amigos’ was released in Brazil. In 2018\, he completed a master’s degree in jazz composition at the University of Montreal under the supervision of bassist Alain Caron (UZEB). That same year\, he released his second album ‘Jazz Brésilien’\, which won the bronze medal at the Global Music Awards and was ranked among the top five jazz albums of 2018 in Quebec by Sorties Jazz Nights. In 2019\, he became an instructor of the Afro-Cuban Brazilian Jazz Ensemble at McGill University. In 2023\, he released his third album under the theme of the number 3. TRE is Rodrigo Simões’ new concept album\, produced by the Toronto jazz label Three Pines Records\, which received the bronze medal at the Global Music Awards for Best Latin Album. Rodrigo’s group won the ‘Band of the Year’ award at the 2024 TUJazz Festival for their performance of TRE. \nDipo Adeola is a Toronto-based guitarist and composer and a graduate of the University of Toronto’s Jazz Performance program. Influenced by swing and bebop\, his playing combines rich harmony with a modern creative approach. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 19\, 2026\nDoors at 7:00pm – Show at 7:30pm\nCMC Presents : Solo Works \nwith Wesley Shen and Roan Ma\n  \nPresenting two of Toronto’s most dynamic new music performers playing a selection of works dear to them. The two will play solo sets of piano music and violin music as well as a piece or two for violin and piano. The concert will also be the premiere of Sonny-Ray Day Rider’s work that is the CLC’s ISCM Commissioning Project for Indigenous Artists. \n—- \nWesley Shen is a Toronto-based pianist and harpsichordist specializing in the performance of contemporary music. He can be found in equal measure as a solo\, collaborative\, chamber and orchestral musician. He regularly performs with a number of groups including Continuum New Music\, New Music Concerts\, Esprit Orchestra\, Soundstreams\, and FAWN Chamber Creative. He is also a core member of the Freesound Ensemble\, one of Toronto’s newer contemporary music collectives. In more traditional settings\, he can also be seen performing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra\, and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. \nA passionate advocate for new music\, Wesley works closely with many of Canada’s top composers including Linda Catlin Smith\, Anna Höstman\, Bekah Simms\, and James O’Callaghan. He can be heard on a number of recent albums including Emilie LeBel’s landscapes of memory\, Bekah Simms’ Bestiaries\, and Monica Pearce’s Textile Fantasies. He has also received numerous grants from the Canada Council of the Arts to commission over a dozen new works for both solo harpsichord and solo piano. He continues to strive to create and contribute to these deeply fruitful collaborative relationships between performers and composers\, as well as promote the harpsichord as an expressive and exciting contemporary music instrument. \nAs well as the piano and harpsichord\, Wesley has added a number of additional instruments to his palette\, namely the shō and more recently the Ondes Martenot. Wesley is a co-founding member of shshcc\, a trio of two shōs and accordion with Michael Murphy and Matti Pulkki\, commissioning and performing newly created works for this unique ensemble. \nRecent appearances include performing Morton Feldman’s Patterns in a Chromatic Field with Amahl Arulanandam\, Gérard Grisey’s Vortex temporum with Freesound Ensemble\, Henryk Gorecki’s Harpsichord Concerto with Esprit Orchestra\, and will soon be performing with Opéra de Montréal on Ondes Martenot in the new opera Clown(s) by Ana Sokolovic. \n______________ \nRoan Ma is a multi-faceted musician passionate about creating space within the classical music world where diverse voices are represented. Her work focuses on rediscovering music and musicians obscured by time and social constrictions\, as well as challenging the conventions of classical violin through contemporary repertoire. \nRoan received her BM and MM degrees in violin performance from the Manhattan School of Music\, graduating from her Masters with the Hugo Kortschak Commencement Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chamber Music. She then received her Master of Music Education from Columbia University’s Teachers College. During her tenure in New York City\, Roan also worked at Manhattan School of Music’s Orto Center for Recording Arts and Distance Learning as both a Recording Engineer and as the Recording Arts Manager. Currently\, Roan is pursuing a DMA in violin performance at the University of Toronto studying under Jonathan Crow and Mark Fewer. \nRecent festivals and residencies include IRCAM’s ManiFeste 2023\, Continuum Contemporary Music’s 2023 HATCH mentorship program\, Bang on a Can’s 2024 Summer Festival\, The Next Festival of Emerging Artists (with the Kronos Quartet)\, and Darmstadt Summer Course 2025. Roan currently works as Continuum Contemporary Music’s Artistic Producer through their MAP program. \nRoan also leads an active academic life in addition to her performance career. Recent paper and lecture-recital presentations of her research at conferences include Female Baroque Composers Hidden in the Male Canon at the Rutgers University Musicological Society’s Graduate Student Conference\, Problems in Progress and Preservation Within Music Conservatories at Columbia University’s “Facing Climates” Conference\, Kaija Saariaho’s Electronics: Reconceptualizing Authorship in Composer-Engineer Collaboration at Carleton University’s Music\, Sound\, and Liminality Conference\, and Her Music or Their Music?: Electronics in Kaija Saariaho’s Compositions and Career at McGill University’s Graduate Music Symposium. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 22\, 2026\nDoors at 7:00pm – Show at 7:30pm\nCMC Presents : Imagined Spaces\nwith Dame Cook and Sergei Kofman\nContrasting wildly different approaches to integrating acoustic and electronic music these two artists imagine ways in which instruments and sound design create spaces both real and imagined.\nComing off a residency at Chalmers House this summer\, Sergei’s music explores the relationship between acoustic piano\, live processing\, and modular synthesizer. Using a pitch tracking algorithm to control the synthesizer\, the music explores the connection points and failures of technology. Dame Cook’s recent album “in that bedroom\, in that white house” in contrast samples instruments and room noises in a deconstruction of bedroom pop aesthetics. Coupled with their superimposed film projections the effect is of being in multiple places at the same time. \n—- \nSergei Kofman (b. 1996) is a composer and producer based in Toronto. Sergei works in a wide range of mediums\, including recorded and live experimental electronic music\, film music\, and music production. Sergei completed a masters degree in Composition from the University of Toronto in 2020\, where he was awarded the 2021 Ann H. Atkinson prize for his piece Voices in the Whir. \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, Sergei received support from the Toronto Arts Council for his project\, I Hear the Scent of Change and Stillness\, an EP which was released in 2023\, accompanied by a concert at Toronto’s ArrayMusic. \nSergei also works under the artist name Measure\, an experimental electronic solo project which encompasses most of his musical output. Under the Measure moniker\, Sergei releases solo work\, performs live across Toronto\, and contributes music to film and media projects. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 4\, 2025\nDoors at 7:00pm – Show at 7:30pm\nCMC Presents : Game Night \nwith Render File and Obuxum \nThis december we’ll be stretching the idea of concerts at the CMC. We’ll be transforming the CMC space into the vibe of a basement jam and dance club! Featuring the local improvising group Render File who live-score video games as they’re played in the moment in a concert experience somewhere between a free-improv jazz set and a “let’s play” video. Closing the night is Somali-Canadian producer and beat maker Obuxum\, herself no stranger to video games\, having scored the indie game “Bravery Network Online”. Obuxum produces music that is as social engaged as it is danceable. \n—- \nRender File is a biweekly immersive event that melds improvised music and video games. Since July 2023\, every 2nd and 4th Wednesday in the basement of the Wenona Craft Beer Lodge\, improvisers and friends gather to score a video game while it is being played live. Emerging musicians from Toronto’s jazz\, improvised\, electronic\, and experimental music scenes are being invited to play each week and it has become a space for experimentation and community building. It also has connections with the vibrant indie game scene in Toronto\, as Render File has hosted several showcase nights where local video game devs get to submit their games and have it scored live in front of an audience. Render File is an ever-growing celebration of our love for community\, music\, technology\, and creativity. \n  \n  \n  \nObuxum is an up and coming electronic musician\, producer and beat maker based in Toronto. \nIn 2020\, Obuxum’s album Rebirth received critical acclaim when it was longlisted for the 2020 Polaris music prize. In addition to performing at various events including Wavelength Festival\, Luminous Fest\, Kazoo Fest\, Electric Eclectics\, and Mutek\, Obuxumproduced In Women Colour\,  a song featured on Haviah Mighty’s  Polaris Prize-winning debut album 13th Floor. their other production credits include the soundtrack for Gloam Collective’s video game\, Bravery Network. Linda is joined by a stallwart in the Toronto new music scene\, pianist Stephanie Chua. Stephanie complements Linda’s program with a selection of adventurous Canadian music from her repertoire. \nThe evening will conclude with a post concert chat between Linda and Stephanie. \n—- \nNamed one of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Hot 30 under 30 Canadian Classical Musicians\, Chinese-Canadian pianist Linda Ruan is passionate about sharing the potential of music to overcome boundaries across cultures. Since being introduced to the drums at the age of four and then the piano at the age of seven\, music has remained a stabilizing force in her diverse childhood from Tokyo\, Shanghai to Vancouver. Her unconventional path from a young age broadened her horizons and cultivated a fascination for diverse cultures. Her curiosity guided her beyond her solo piano studies\, expanding to music pedagogy and community engagement\, the fortepiano\, conducting and a wide range of chamber music projects. \nLinda is a top prize winner in a number of international piano competitions including the VI Odin International Music Competition\, Music Without Limits International Competition\, and the Seattle International Piano Competition. Her piano duo La Fiammata is the second prize winner of the ARD International Music Competition 2021. She has performed in venues across the world\, from Carnegie’s Weill Hall and Lincoln Center’s Rose Studio to a recital tour in China spanning Guangzhou to Shanghai. Founded in 2022 at the Longy School of Music of Bard College by Aspen Barker\, Yi Charice Tang\, Simone Cartales\, and Rosalyn Taylor\, GAIA Quartet was formed out of a shared passion for bringing contemporary music to modern audiences. In 2023\, GAIA Quartet was named Graduate Chamber Fellows at Longy School of Music of Bard College and served as the Quartet-in-Residence with the Composition Department. \nDespite the vast amount of innovative music being written today\, much of it remains unheard by general audiences. This realization shaped GAIA Quartet’s mission: to make new music more accessible\, engaging\, and relevant to listeners beyond the classical music world. The quartet’s name reflects this mission. The name “GAIA” comes from the Greek goddess Gaia\, the personification of Mother Earth. She is powerful yet often overlooked—much like the composers GAIA Quartet champions. Gaia’s story resonated with the quartet as a symbol of resilience\, transformation\, and creation—values that define both their music-making and their dedication to contemporary composers. The name also represents the diversity within the group\, honoring different backgrounds and artistic perspectives while embracing the strength to persist\, evolve\, and create. GAIA Quartet continues to push for change in classical music. By commissioning new works\, collaborating with composers\, and rethinking how audiences engage with contemporary music\, they are committed to making new music more accessible\, meaningful\, and relevant. \nAspen Barker began playing violin in a 4th-grade after-school strings program in Miami. Inspired by early performances with the New World Symphony and Amernet String Quartet\, she pursued a Bachelor of Music at Loyola University New Orleans and a Master of Music at Longy School of Music of Bard College\, studying with Amy Thiaville\, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg\, Paula Majerfeld\, and Karla Donehew Perez. A passionate advocate for accessible music education\, Aspen has volunteered with Miami Music Project\, Make Music NOLA\, El Sistema\, and Boston Strings Academy. Now based in Boston\, she teaches full-time and performs with ensembles including the Du Bois Orchestra\, Reading Symphony Orchestra\, Palaver Strings\, Ensemble Uncaged\, and Mass Opera. Aspen has worked with artists such as Michael Tilson Thomas\, Joel Smirnoff\, and members of A Far Cry\, INTERWOVEN\, and the Aizuri Quartet. In 2022\, she co-founded GAIA Quartet\, an all-women string quartet dedicated to empowering young female musicians. GAIA was named Graduate Fellowship Quartet in Residence at Longy. \nCaroline Shaw is a musician who moves among roles\, genres\, and mediums\, trying to imagine a world of sound that has never been heard before but has always existed. She works often in collaboration with others—as producer\, composer\, violinist\, and vocalist. Shaw is the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in Music\, an honorary doctorate from Yale\, four Grammys\, and a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. She has written and produced for iconic artists and ensembles across the musical spectrum\, including Rosalía\, Renée Fleming\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Tiler Peck\, Nas\, Kanye West\, the LA Phil\, the NY Phil\, and others. Current touring projects include shows with Sō Percussion\, Ringdown\, Attacca Quartet\, Roomful of Teeth\, Graveyards & Gardens\, Gabriel Kahane\, and Kamus Quartet. Her favorite color is yellow\, and her favorite smell is rosemary. \nChristine Delphine Hedden is a Boston-based composer\, violist\, and traditional Irish fiddler whose work blends classical music with folk traditions. Originally from western Connecticut\, her early love of storytelling and nature continues to inspire her music. She has performed at venues like Club Passim and the Boston Celtic Music Festival and released her debut album When the Aster Blooms in 2019. Her classical compositions have been performed by groups such as Orchestra of St. Luke’s and ETHEL Quartet\, and her recent work Solstice reflects on climate change in New England. Christine holds degrees from the University of Michigan and Carnegie Mellon and teaches at South Shore Conservatory\, where she chairs the String Department. \nGabriella Smith is a composer whose vibrant\, nature-inspired music celebrates climate action and sonic exploration. Hailed as an “outright sensation” (LA Times)\, her works have been performed by major ensembles like the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic. Recent highlights include Lost Coast\, a cello concerto premiered by Gustavo Dudamel\, and Tumblebird Contrails\, featured at the Nobel Prize Concert. Her acclaimed debut album Lost Coast was named one of NPR’s top albums of 2021. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area\, Gabriella draws deep inspiration from the natural world. \nHsiu-Ping Patrick Wu is an award-winning Taiwanese-Canadian composer\, violinist\, and multimedia artist based in Toronto. Known for blending Taiwanese\, minimalistic\, and neo-romantic styles\, he draws from his multicultural heritage to create evocative compositions that range from lyrical to avant-garde. Wu has collaborated with prestigious ensembles like the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and studied under prominent composers and violinists. A recipient of multiple scholarships\, he is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Toronto\, crafting music that often integrates cultural\, dramatic\, and improvisational elements. \nMichelle Lorimer is a Toronto-based composer for film\, television\, and the concert stage. Her recent screen credits include scoring Words Left Unspoken (CSA-nominated\, CBC Gem)\, Loud & Here (Hot Docs\, Crave)\, Crossing the Divide (Citizen Minutes 3)\, and When I Go Outside by Geordie Sabbagh. She has composed for CBC’s The Nature of Things and is developing new work through the Women in Animation ACE 4 program. Michelle’s concert music has been performed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra\, Allegra Chamber Orchestra\, Peterborough Concert Band\, NU Quintet (NYC)\, and more. Her piece Commuting was commissioned by The Sonority Sisters with funding from the New World Symphony. She was a recipient of the Johanna Metcalf Protegé Prize\, nominated by composer Kevin Lau. She is a member of the SCGC\, SOCAN\, and the Alliance for Women Film Composers. She holds an ARCT in piano and a composition degree from Humber College\, where she received the Dean’s Award. Michelle lives in Etobicoke with her husband\, two kids\, and two cats\, and enjoys mentoring young musicians and singing with L’Arche Daybreak. \nSalome Yichi Zhang is a composer born in China and raised in Canada. Her composition thematic material centres mainly on the subject of womanhood. By combining artistic element such as poetry\, her topics explore dream\, hallucination and reality by using hugely contrasting compositional language. Winning a total of 25\,000 dollars of scholarship\, her music has been performed in Beijing\, Moscow\, Vancouver\, Boston and Toronto.\n​

Rachel Fenlon takes her signature self-accompanied style to the music of composer Daniel Janke from their recently released album Map of You (available from Centrediscs). This music sits at the boundary between art-song and folk creating a language and topology all its own. Rounding out the program is Maeve Palmer and Jialiang Zhu’s exploration of Canadian-Irish identity\, contrasting contemporary composers from both Ireland and Irish-Canadian composers here. \n \nRachel Fenlon is a soprano and pianist who is finding a unique voice on the classical music stages of the world. Drawing from a singer-songwriter approach\, Rachel performs song recitals as both singer and pianist accompanying herself. Praised for her “unusually shaped recitals in keeping with her extraordinary talent” (Places des Arts/Festival de Lanaudière)\, Rachel performs internationally as a recitalist\, as solo pianist and singer\, and on the opera stage. Rachel was born in the UK\, raised on the west coast of Canada\, and is now based in Berlin. \nThe 2024/25 season sees Rachel make self-accompanied recital debuts at the Konzerthaus Berlin\, the Bechstein Hall\, Salle Bourgie Montreal\, Vancouver Recital Society\, the Virtuosi Festival in Brazil and the Algarve Music Series. She returns to her native Canada\, touring various programmes at leading festivals and venues including Salle Bourgie\, Vancouver Recital Society\, Domaine Forget\, Coast Recital Society\, ArtSpring\, SweetWater Music Festival\, and Music Toronto. In opera\, Rachel returns to work with Ensemble Nylandia/Isabella Shaw in La Doriclea. Rachel releases her debut solo album of Schubert’s Die Winterreise on Orchid Classics in autumn 2024. \nFurther collaborations in 2024/25 include the premiere of Daniel Janke’s new songs which will be performed live in 2025 and released on Centredisques the same year. Rachel collaborates with Manufaktur für aktuelle Musik (MAM) and SWR Radio singing and playing synthesizer in a new work composed by Mart*n Schuettler and will perform new works by Samy Moussa and Víktor Orrí Arnason. Although most of his training is in the Farrukabad gharana\, he has also trained in the Qasur style with Pandit Sushil Kumar Jain. He has accompanied many accomplished artists such as Aarti Anklikar\, Buddadev Das Gupta\, Dhruba Ghosh\, Lakshmi Shankar and Shantanu Bhattacharya. Ravi has been an active member of the Canadian world music scene for nearly 20 years. As a vital part of Toronto’s large South Asian community\, Ravi continues to perform traditional music from India\, while participating in many cross-cultural exchanges. He has toured extensively in Europe\, India\, United States\, Mexico\, Argentina and Japan. Ravi is a frequent collaborator with such groups as Niyaz\, Constantinople\, Avataar\, and Monsoon. Currently\, he is involved in three new collectives; 1) So Long Seven (folk-roots world music)\, Near East (India\, Mid-East) and Sansar (Hindustani\, Carnatic). \nIn 2011 Toronto’s South Asian community acknowledged Ravi’s contributions to music by bestowing on him the Grant’s Desi Achievers Award. Ravi has had several Juno nominations and is featured on Kiran Alhuwalia’s Juno winning recording Beyond Boundaries. For 11 years Ravi led his own Indo-jazz ensemble Tasa\, which in turn influenced many world music artists in Canada. Tasa toured internationally and recorded 4 CDs of Ravi’s original music. Tasa was awarded an Urban Music Award for Best World Music album. \nRavi is frequently hired as a guest lecturer by the music department at York University and Humber College. In 2017 he founded the Rhythm House music school\, dedicated to providing high quality instruction on tabla\, sitar and other Hindustani and Western instruments. The school provides private as well as group classes and master classes with Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. Rhythm House employs highly accomplished teacher on each instrument. \n________________________________ \nAtish Mukhopadhyay is one of the very few “SARODE” virtuosos from the present generation of ‘North Indian Classical Instrumental musicians’ – an avid scholar of traditional music and the direct representative and torch bearer of ‘Maihar Senia Gharana of Baba Allauddin Khan’. The installation focuses on marking the politics of often unmarked defaults of spectatorial concert (“classical”) music\, particularly those of silent\, seated\, focal listening\, and of organizing musical practice around closed\, immaterial works. \nGrounded in methods of Black and Indigenous studies\, the installation investigates how the concert hall’s central subject-position\, the Spectator\, is always-already relational\, and specifically how the Spectator’s sensory capacity depends axiomatically upon the discursive displacement of the exteriority of sensation onto racially-marked figures of sensory incapacity. The featured works map how seemingly routine protocols of concert music are not easily separable from protocols of empire\, as a necessary step towards a politicized dismantling of concert music. Their highly evocative improvised performances unite the Kurdish kamanche with the classical cello while traveling beyond both musical traditions. \nThe duo has made waves with performances at Montreal’s Place des Arts for Festival du Monde Arabe\, the Canadian Opera Company\, the Aga Khan Museum’s concert series\, the National Arts Centre\, Shenkman Arts Centre\, and the Cello Biennale Amsterdam. \nRecorded in one take\, their self-titled debut album\, which includes 6 improvised pieces\, has been met with unanimous critical acclaim. In May 2019\, Kamancello made their orchestral debut performing their own double concerto “Convergence Suite” with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra to an enthusiastic sold-out audience. Following the release of their second album\, Kamancello II: Voyage in the summer of 2019\, the duo travelled to Newfoundland’s west coast for a week-long residency where they collaborated with local musicians. Kamancello’s third full-length album Of Shadows was released in 2020. Us? Our planet? What happens when sustenance is absent? From the energy and joy that the interactive elements of play and dance ignite to themes of internal sustenance provided by the divine and more tangible elements of food and water\, this program of premieres explores personal and collective sources. \nSUSTENANCE marks a new life chapter born out of the days of isolation and silence of 2020. With the drastic and sudden all-encompassing change experienced\, I was forced to spend much introspective time. Becoming disconsolate with the (lack of) societal contribution I was making as a violinist\, I became invested in exploring new avenues for connection. With the encouragement of some close friends and colleagues\, I imagined a program of 21st century Canadian music for violin and piano based on the theme of sustenance\, with the intention to commission pieces from some of my favourite composers.
