SUMMARY:SHHH!! Ensemble Album Launch: Meanwhile
DESCRIPTION:September 29\, 7:30 pm \nSHHH!! Ensemble Album Launch: Meanwhile\nJoin SHHH!! Ensemble and celebrate the release of their debut album “Meanwhile”\, featuring electrifying new music for piano and percussion by some of Canada’s most creative voices. \nSHHH!!… a powerful utterance designed to draw attention forward… creating space and awareness… opening ears to something important. \nPercussionist Zac Pulak and pianist Edana Higham\, the two members of the duo SHHH!! Ensemble\, have carved a space for themselves as compelling performers\, collaborators\, and commissioners of electrifying new music. They have toured across  Canada\, performing works written for them by both established and emerging composers. A keen taste for experimentation and discovery has guided their “avant-accessible” projects\, which they have workshopped at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity\, the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance\, and the Canadian Music Centre\, leading to feature performances at the Tuckamore Festival\, Ottawa Chamberfest\, Open Ears Festival of Music and Sound\, the National Arts Centre #CanadaPerforms series\, and a live-for-broadcast performance on the CBC Radio 2 program “In Concert.” Upcoming projects include the world premiere of Machines\, Mannequins\, and Monsters\, a new double concerto written for them by Kelly-Marie Murphy\, with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Additionally\, as co-artistic directors of the Ottawa New Music Creators\, Zac and Edana enjoy curating performances by leading Canadian and international artists in their home base of Ottawa\, Ontario. \nTickets : $20

SUMMARY:Chris Pruden's Suns
DESCRIPTION:Suns is a set of solo piano improvisations and compositions performed by Toronto pianist Chris Pruden. \nWhile already recognized as a notable Canadian pianist/keyboardist in several projects (Tara Kannangara\, Sammy Jackson\, Zinnia\, Future Machines\, Language Arts)\, this is the first release under his own name. \nSuns\, released on Elastic Recordings\, is refreshingly informal\, recorded amongst friends\, documenting unfinished thoughts and new reflections in the moments they arrive and depart. Pruden exhibits technical and musical control that is always on the edge\, tumbling through insecurities and surrendering to the sound of the moment. It is both meditative and frenetic\, playful and serious\, vulnerable and resilient. \nThe seven pieces take influences from the music of György Ligeti\, Sun Ra\, Cecil Taylor\, Unsuk Chin\, Ann Southam\, and Elliott Carter (whose piano piece Catenaires is featured as a final track). \nThe album launch will feature a performance from Chris\, and a set of music from Yunjin Claire Lee. The event will be live streamed. No tickets will be made available publicly. \n\n\n\nChris Pruden Bio & Music \nChris Pruden is a pianist/keyboardist based in Toronto\, ON. Heavily influenced by jazz\, contemporary classical\, folk\, rock and electronic music\, Chris has performed across North America\, China\, and Europe. He is a frequent sideman and collaborator with Tara Kannangara\, Sammy Jackson\, Zinnia\, Language Arts\, Future Machines\, and Ronley Teper's Lipliners. \nYunjin Claire Lee Bio & Music \n \nYunjin Claire Lee is a Korean Canadian pianist\, keyboardist\, sound designer\, composer and producer; a sought-after collaborator for creating electrifying soundscapes. She has worked on local and international projects in an extensive range of genres including traditional and avant-garde jazz\, contemporary classical\, musique concrète\, ambient techno\, synthwave\, and pop.   \nHer debut album Voluntary Response (2020) – a solo piano improvisation recordings weaved with electronic processing via Rabid Elephant's prototype synth\, gained her an international fanbase in the experimental music scene. Her ambient electronic singles Underwater Arcade (2020) and Dive (2021) had been featured on radio stations across the country such as CJSW 90.9 FM\, CKUT 90.3 FM\, CITR 101.9 FM\, and CHMA 106.9 FM. \nIn October 2021\, she was featured on Discover Women in Jazz series on JAZZ.FM91\, showcasing a new electro-acoustic duo with Ben Grossman on hurdy-gurdy. They are currently working on a new album to be released in 2022. \nPhoto credit: Brendan Mariani \nDive by Yunjin Claire Lee\nAbout Elastic Recordings \nElastic Recordings is the co-creation of Canadian vibraphonist\, Michael Davidson\, and Canadian double bassist\, Dan Fortin. It is a collective outlet exploring the spaces where composition and improvisation overlap; the points at which nostalgia meets the present moment.   \nThe label will promote music that fits between the gaps of genre and that has been historically difficult to classify.\n \nFollow Elastic Recordings | Instagram\, Twitter

SUMMARY:Wounded Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Wounded Landscapes is the culmination of nearly three years of collaboration between pianists Megan Thibeault (Halifax)\, Justin Paul Ortez (Michigan)\, and composer Cory Harper-Latkovich (Toronto). The result is three new works for piano: two solo works which evoke each respective pianist’s sensibilities as an artist\, and one piano duo which synthesizes elements of the solo works. \nSocieties of Solitude written with Megan Thibeault is a suite of shorter pieces which are individually unique in tone and energy and represent Thibeault’s own dynamic style as a performer. \nWounded Landscapes written with Justin Paul Ortez on the other hand\, is a large piece that stretches the perception of time and form and reflects Ortez’s own patience and focus as a performer. \nevocation\, Intimacy takes elements of the two solo pieces and presents them in a performance which reflects the ritual of collaboration that created itself: solitude\, coming together\, intense focus\, improvisation\, creation.

SUMMARY:Tradition & Disruption
DESCRIPTION:Tradition and Disruption explores some of the opposing and conflicting forces behind the creation of piano music in the classical European tradition from the 17th to the 21st centuries. Through their works\, every composer on this program portrays the co-existence of multiple cultural\, national\, stylistic and geographic elements. In some cases\, as with Bach\, Tajčević\, Chopin or Liszt\, this contrast integrates smoothly with traditional forms and modes of expression; in others\, as in the case of Rachmaninov\, Maksimović and Sokolović\, the disruptive elements strive to break loose from the confines of centuries’ old tradition. \nIn his personal and expressive performing style\, Canadian-Serbian pianist Viktor Lazarov brings to you a recital of his favourite styles: Baroque\, Romantic and Contemporary. In his original programmes\, Lazarov continues to champion the music inspired by Balkan themes\, such as the works of composers Marko Tajčević\, Svetlana Maksimović and Ana Sokolović. \nTime / Doors 7:30 pm\, Concert 8:00 pm \nTickets / $25 General\, $15 Senior/Student \nProgramme / \nJ.S. The programme will focus on five works by Canadian cellist-composers commissioned by VC2\, each inspired by one of the Beethoven Sonatas for Cello and Piano. These pieces were commissioned for the duo by their former teacher and Albertan cello virtuoso Shauna Rolston-Shaw. The five works will be contrasted with two newly commissioned works by esteemed Canadians Kelly-Marie Murphy and Vincent Ho as well as other cello centric works from at home and abroad that explore the vast sonic capabilities of the cello duo. \nTime | Doors 7:00pm\, Concert 7:30pm \nProgramme | \nEx Animo\, Hunter Coblentz (b. 1988)\nHeist 2\, Vincent Ho (b. 1975)\nFive Little Pieces\, Andrew Downing (b.1973)\nEntsprechung\, Matt Brubeck (b.1961)\nRidge and Furrow\, Fjola Evans (b. 1987)\nFinal Glimpse\, Kelly-Marie Murphy (b. 1964)\nArboreto Salvatico\, Giovanni Sollima (b. 1962)\nDogged\, Fjola Evans (b. 1987)\nDuo? o Du…\, Thomas Demenga (b. 1954)\nTwo Cellos\, Dilations\, Hunter Coblentz (b. 1988)\nTriumvirate\, Raphael Weinroth-Browne (b.1989) \nAbout the artists | VC2 Cello Duo is an innovative cello duo ensemble that captivates audiences through their performances of classical masterworks\, unknown gems and boundary pushing music. Comprised of cellists Amahl Arulanandam and Bryan Holt\, CBC Radio says VC2 is “a tight unit\, with excellent intonation and expression.” They present artistically challenging\, yet accessible programs in venues ranging from intimate cabarets to Roy Thomson Hall. \nAs respected cellists\, they have performed as part of leading music organizations including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra\, Canadian Opera Company Orchestra\, National Ballet of Canada Orchestra\, Soundstreams\, Art of Time Ensemble\, Continuum Contemporary Music\, New Music Concerts\, Music in the Barns\, Thin Edge New Music Collective\, and others. The duo has been featured artists at Ottawa Chamberfest\, Indian River Festival\, Ottawa New Music Creators\, 21C Music Festival\, Ritornello Festival\, and the Prairie Cello Institute. Committed to the creation of new works by living composers\, especially to create works based on the Beethoven Cello Sonatas project. In addition to their performances\, VC2\, with the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council\, recorded these works and in fall 2018\, released the album Beethoven’s Cellists which CBC Radio calls a “First-rate” recording. \nIn February 2018\, VC2 embarked on a tour of the East Coast of Canada\, presented by Debut Atlantic. The duo also spent time summer 2018 at the soundSCAPE performance and composition exchange in Maccagno\, Italy and brought home a number of new works by emerging international composers. VC2 is thrilled to be one of Prairie Debut’s 2019-20 Touring Artists.

SUMMARY:KappaMusik Crossing
DESCRIPTION:Experimental Music for Ensembles\, Drums\, and Electronics | James Harley / Philippe Hode-Keyser \nThis new disc represents decades of musical exploration\, rooted in jazz but pushing far out from that tradition. All of the music is based on notated scores for large ensembles (« big bands ») but improvisation plays a large role. Performances by Hode-Keyser in Montreal of existing music composed in the 1980s by Harley led to two new works composed specially for Hode-Keyser’s Ensemble Kappa. These scores question the jazz tradition through a lense shaped by immersion in European contemporary music\, after Harley had spent six years living in London\, Paris\, and Warsaw.  KappaMusik was premiered at the Open Ears Festival in Kitchener. \nThis CMC presentation will explore the dynamic relationship between notated musical scores and creative interpretation/improvisation. The Cool Hearts Band will perform two versions of Sabbath\, one of the works included on the  CD\, alongside a discussion of the creative process that shaped the project. \nJames Harley is Professor of Music and Critical Studies in Improvisation at the University of Guelph. Philippe Hode-Keyser is a musician and band-leader in Montreal. \nAdmission Free* \nTime / 2:00-4:00 pm / Doors at 1:30 pm \n*Audience members who make a $20 donation to the CMC during advanced registration or at the door will receive a free copy of the album courtesy of the artist.

SUMMARY:Bandoneón Masterclass for Composers
DESCRIPTION:The Bandoneon\, mostly known as the “tango accordion\,” is a free reed instrument that was developed in Germany at the end of the 19th century and evolved in Argentinian popular music. Despite of it’s folk connotation the Bandoneón was designed with the polyphonic and expressive criteria found in classical instruments. \nIn the last thirty years the Bandoneón has gained recognition as a concert instrument\, as soloist\, in chamber music\, contemporary and experimental music\, its musical growth and projection goes beyond tango and traditional music and it certainly has great potential for composers nowadays being a very expressive polyphonic instrument with strong presence in ensembles and solo. \nThe lecture will explore the sonorities\, textures\, harmonic\, melodic and polyphonic aspects using both traditional and modern music. The event is oriented to composers or arrangers and composition students from all genres. \nThis is event is free! If you cannot attend in person you can join the livestream. \nAbout Amijai Shalev //  \nAmijai (pronounced Ami-hai) is one of those rare musicians in the bandoneon world who has broken out of the common tango mold to explore the full polyphonic and rhythmic potential of the instrument. Earning his degree from the “Manuel de Falla” Conservatory of Buenos Aires in 2012\, he studied under the tutelage of maestro Rodolfo Daluisio\, the great pioneer of classical and contemporary music for the bandoneon. Following in the footsepts of Maestrol Daluisio\, Amijai has forged a career encompassing the full range of the bandoneon: from solo classical to orchestral works\, from tango to heavy metal compositions. \nPresently\, Amijai performs in the eclectic duo Orquesta Diptica (contemporary tango by Marcelo Lodigiani) and in the jazztango quartet of Julian Graciano. In 2017 he released his instrumental heavy metal recording “Bandolirium” from which the track “Falso Dilema” won first prize in the Nuevos Aires competition for new tango compositions. \nAmijai currently teaches senior students of the J.P Esnaola School of Music in Buenos Aires\, and is the Professor of Bandoneon in two of the main conservatories in the province of Buenos Aires. \nBorn in Canada to a Polish father and Argentine mother\, and raised in Israel\, Amijai has resided in Buenos Aires since 2006. \n  \nAccessibility information: The Canadian Music Centre is an accessible venue through a street level entrance to the right of the main entrance. The CMC has gender neutral washrooms. Contact matthew.fava@cmccanada.org with any questions pertaining to accessibility for this event.
